But I do want to improve! I think of it like this. It's like quitting smoking. Maybe not to that level, but the same KIND of process. I can't just completely STOP and never start again, I have to slowly do it less and less, until EVENTUALLY I stop all together.

The process you describe will never work. Trust me, I've tried it. You just don't think before your post. You don't ask yourself "hey, is this post I'm about to submit going to result in a lot of shit?" It is very very possible to "just completely STOP and never start again," you just need to do it already and stop giving yourself lame excuses to continue acting the way you are.
