Kidkay Proudly Presents
Lantic
Come traveler we welcome you as both guest and family.

Lantic is my attempt at a free roam RPG. My Aim is to create something Like an Elder Scrolls or a Zelda. The main difference would be that i want to create a world that the player is truly apart of without a main storyline that the player is tied too. Bare with me on the rest.

The Story:
You play the hero, as newcomer to the Lantic region of the world you dont know much about life there. In your Croation homeland you've heard tales of heroes who fight for the Lantic Government against thugs, bandits, crooks, and the likes. Stories of the Grand imperial city, The open fields, snowy mountains, and fiery volcanoes. Your first Night in this new Land is all but luxurious. The grand imperial city is but a brick wall in the distance, The inns have all closed for the night and you have no where left to stay. As Luck should have a traveling merchant takes you in for the night. In exchange you must escort her as she explores an ancient ruin. You set out at day break venturing forth in to the land only time knows whats in store for you.

The Characters:
Soldiers - Members of the Lantian Public guard, They are charged with protecting the Citizens of Lantic during times of war. While they often patrol the cities of Lantic, they have no actual authority, and can not legally make arrests.

Bandits - While bandits are often citizens of Lantic, many can only see them as cold blooded terrorist. In past times Bandits belonged to the thieves guild, however an incident involving a purge caused the guild to split resulting in the creation of Bandits Guild. The choices made by members of the bandits guild, caused any practical allies to hate them resulting in Lantic's first civil war, commonly know as the Great Guild War.

Independents - Any Creature not belonging to a guild is classed as an independent.

The Game:
-The Entire game will be 1 500x500 map plus Interiors for accessible buildings and caves.
-It will have a Zelda Style combat system - However you will still have to encounter enemies.
-I want it to have items that aren't needed till you need them. (<- thats a joke, Laugh :P)
-Plenty of People and creatures to interact with. and puzzles that actually take time to solve.
-The Land is governed so naturally there are laws.
-Its going to have a VERY limited Hud, and test your abilities as a players to determine when its time to push harder or run.
-The Tutorials only cover basic gameplay, To learn the rest try interacting with people, or visiting a library.
Lets talk about gameplay.
First I'll touch on the battle system, the system is going to be pretty simple.  You've got a weapon hack your enimies till they die. Normally your party will consist of you, However if you can gain support, make friends, or obtain allies, They can join your party. The function of the party is to provide stat support.  For instance, soldiers increase the damage dealt to eminies classifyed as bandits. Hunters will increase the damage done to creatures, and so on. Your party members will not be displayed on the field, the only exception is during camp. Camp is a feature that lets you restore your parties health as well as passing time. During camp you may interact with your party, They may ask your questions or you may ask them questions.  Camp may be set up once a day and entering a town destroys your camp.
Next Lets cover the Laws. In the Lantic region there are X major cities. throughout each there are set of laws and soldiers to enfore them. The laws Vary by area and just Might be subject to change. Soldiers of area X Might capture you for a crime you commited in area Y. However soldiers of area Z just might praise you for it.
Thats all i have for now.

This is definitely a good start, although a bit more details would be good. I'll be sure to watch out for this.

I like the idea of 1 500x500 map as your entire game. It's rather original and a bit gimmicky. Just remember to always map in small blocks and forget that you're mapping one massive map; map lots of much smaller ones.
it's like a metaphor or something i don't know

Kidkay

Thanks for the tips, Main post has been updated.

Im about 80% of the way with my 500x500 map. 2 notes of notes about the map...
-30% of the map is water.
-I intend to add Islands after the game has been completed
That said Im looking for a couple of people (3 or 4) to take a look at the map.
Im well aware that there are some empty areas on the map and i do plan to fill them with something.

One giant map will have horrible lag on the common computer.

hiromu656

I'm also worried about lag issues. But still I'd like to look at your map.

I have been thinking of an idea i could use to reduce the amount of lag. i have a 9 year old computer, its got: 1.5 gigs of ram, an old GF6200, and a Pentium 4, not to mention im running win7. IM assuming if i can get decent frame rates on my pc, everyone else can as well.

The ideas i have so far is a checking system to keep events from happening if they dont need to, to me that idea conflicts with the player being able to take on quests after they have started. which means thats it is highly likely that there will be quests that you cant help but miss. Sorry if im not making sense im a mess right now :P.

The gist is to keep unnecessary events from happening, and ill up load the entire map, the main city is still incomplete.

Its on this post and the main post, you will need the rtp.

I just scouted your map. I think everything other than the forest to the East of the starting zone needs to have a bit more details. But the map in general looks great, the game runs smooth enough at the moment, but once those events come up, the true lag test shall begin. I like the Ice section especially, and there appears to be dungeons in some of these areas, I hope I'm right when I say that.

I just re-read your OP, I was wondering about the character you play as; a game like this deserves to have some type of character creation or at least gender and class, because reading "hack your enemies until they die" infers (to me) that you can solely be a warrior. And there won't be much re-playability if you can't at least cast a few spells. I've been playing a lot of Torchlight and something really cool about it is every class can equip every item, and that makes the game be nearly different every time you play it. Just a suggestion, but I'd love to be a Fireball Shooting Heavy Armor dude.

exhydra

I believe that most anti-lag scripts disable other NPCs and events after you leave a certain range. You may want to check into one of those if you're concerned about the lag that using such a large map will bring.

Also, the map looks pretty good so far. I would suggest a little more blending between the areas, as at the moment the transition from one place to another is fairly abrupt.

I agree with Exhydra. Also a Day/Night and Weather Effects (more important) will make it greater moreso.

Kidkay

Ill take that into account, I my self am quite worried about, weather effects as well as a proper working DNN script.
As of now, im working on the final city. My next objective will be to Add More detail to areas. As for the are transitions i have no idea what ill do, My first though is to use bushes, cliffs, and other obstacles to direct the player to areas with proper transitions. As for player creation im thinking that im going to have a set up at the beginning that allows mild customization.(look, gender, player type) Im using an Evented battle system that dosent really allow for much customization. I already have a system that will allow the player to hot key up to 3 skills. Really all i need is to come up with a system for projectiles.

No updates today.

What can I say, you grabbed my attention with a nice and tidy premise, so I checked it out. The map looks fine to me, considering it's
early stage of development.
Wish you all the best of luck with this project!

Thanks for the input, Im working on The interiors. Once they are complete Ill start The battle system. I have a tech demo to show the battle system, ill edit this post and attach it once but it still needs a projectile system.
Edit I Lied, Didnt feel like making a system.
