Disconnecting USB

Sorry to post another one while Underfan is still unresolved, but I have a USB issue that needs solving.

Whenever I plug a storage device or the like into my laptop, it'll disconnect if I jiggle the chord at all. Normally I thought this was just defective chords, but it does this with my 160GB HDD, my DSFirecard, my iPod, and now, my new 500GB HDD.

There's no way on earth that all of those chords are broken. Especially the one belonging to my new-ass HDD. So clearly there's something wrong with my USB ports or something. Now I had this same problem earlier with my old laptop. Whenever I plugged in my 160GB HDD, it would randomly disconnect. Sometimes if I jiggled the chord, sometimes if I left it alone.

What is it that makes USB ports act this way? How do I fix it?
Additional info: My 500GB HDD has its own plug so it can get its own power source.

Sophist

Maybe if you started spelling it cord instead of chord.

Aside from your terribad grasp on English; It means your USB port is fucked over. Surprise surprise, fixing it would call for professional repair.

It can be wrong with the os too. I had that problem with my win 2000 laptop.  A fresh install fixed it.
If that don't work, leave your pc for reparation or get a new one.

Seems like a great solution considering the problem happens when AF jiggles the cord.

Irock

He's not jiggling it on purpose, you idiots. Your solution is the equivalent of a doctor telling a patient with a nail in his foot to simply stop stepping on nails.

Holkeye

Stop putting nails in wood?

Who puts nails in wood
People who want to nail two or more pieces of wood together.

Kokowam

Just use a bigger piece of wood.

CartoonFan

My wood's big enough to satisfy, thank you very much.

Well, I had to send this sucker in to get it repaired anyway. I guess I'll just add USB port to the list of things wrong with it.
By the way, would a laptop ever have both a heatsink and a fan? When I read my repair logs for my old laptop regarding its lag, they said what they did was repair/replace the fan/heatsink.

Moss.
