Keeping Achievements in Live Transfer

OK, my friend and I have figured out how to get her Live access at low cost. What her concern now is this:

When she goes to set up her Live account, the gamer tag might already be taken.

All of her achievements are registered under an offline gamertag. How can we help her keep her achievements if her gamertag is already taken online?

oh and your friend should have just signed up for live silver when they first got their 360 anyway it would have reserved theit gamertag and they'd get to keep their achivements
