I need Help with a mages skill!

Ok im new here and i need some help, the problem is i wana have a mages guild in my game and i wana have it so you speak to the Head wizard and he gives you an assignment(for example kill 8 earth elementals) and once you have done it you level up and gain a new spell but it will take me pages of writing etc.. and i wonder if there is an easier way with a mage level,
