This tutorial is great for new people:

http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,762.0.html

to answer your specific questions:

In the system tab of the database (accessed by F9 or by clicking the icon), you can set starting party in the top right corner.

Attacks are based on the weapons they have equipped. You can set an animation on any weapon (in the weapons tab of the database) and all you need to do is equip the weapon.

A lot of your questions can be answered through the tutorial I linked to. The help file is also a good source, and you can always right click on stuff and click "What's this?" and get a short description of the thing.

Oh. That tutorial is the bomb. That's the first tutorial I ever looked at for RMXP and it pretty much got me to where I am today. ^_^ Also, this community is friendly, but mostly in this section of the forums where the frequent RMXP/RM2k3 stay.

Yeah. Learn the concept of switches, self-switches, and variables as fast as possible. Learn as much of them as you can to begin with and you'll do much better with eventing. They are also used a looooot.

Don't forget to read the story making tuts on the tutorial database section.

Never make a game without a story, It won't happen.
and if it did, won't be pretty, matey.....
You'll swab the deck of your mind for months without advancing in your project !
