Is there a way to make it so that it shows text, but for a selected amount of time only and let the character still move while it's up?  When I go into a new area I want it to say "town" or park" or whatever, but I don't want to press action every time.

You can make a picture for each town, final fantasy 9 style. So the picture shows the town in fancy writing , for as long as you want it to be there.
