items - showing up in the menu

i have an event that is supposed to give me a letter after pressing the action key. I press return and it all works fine, but i just cant see the letter in the inventory (i assume that the inventory is what you get when you press "Esc"). This might be because there is a different menu from the inventory, i don't know, so can anyone help? or is it just that you can't see some items in the inventory...
