Simple File server for updates?

Okay, so here's my issue: I have a possible program for keeping my client up to date, using a simple patch system, but it requires one thing that seems to be really hard to come by these days; a simple file host that allows me to specify a direct link to individual files. Skydrive kind-of allows this, but not to the extent that I need. MediaFire has the same issue, and DropBox is even worse. All of these services are great for storage options in general, but nowhere seems to have what I need. In short, I need to be able to point to www.sitename.com/stuff/game/updates/patch.txt or something very close to that

The reason file hosters don't do this is because they wouldn't be able to show any ads on a download page.

What you could do is use a dropbox account's public folder and then reference the link. Then as you edit the file in your dropbox folder, the URL is static but the content can be changed.

If you plan to serve bigger files to many users from your dropbox account though, they will limit access. A little text fie is no problem though.

Yeah that's true.. I think I may just go the route of creating patches that have to manually downloaded. I don't think that DropBox would like me serving 60-100MB updates through them lolz. I guess I would have thought that as a paying member on Skydrive, I would have had some better options like static name links at least.. but no  =p

Please consider git.

Downloaded the components I need, and got an account on GitHub, but I have one issue with it... I'm actually having trouble figure it out lmao....

Git is way over-complex for that purpose, and not intended for that purpose either. Dropbox is the ideal method.

Yeah, I'll try out box. I already looked through dropbox, and unfortunately it doesn't work the way I need it to. It allows for static links, but it doesn't let me specify the file.txt name that I need for the update system =p

You should use the public folder in your dropbox folder. Then just edit / create files on your PC, right click them, copy public link. You'll get a static link to your file.

I read a while ago that Dropbox discontinued the public folder for newly created accounts.

Public folder makes more sense... I'll just go ahead and look at that again, since Box just isn't working out the way I want it to =p

EDIT: Well shit, that works. Ended up being able to link it properly =p (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25886192/BoL/readme.txt) that was the test link. Looks like it works fine...

EDIT: Also, I just read through the whole thread, and god am I an idiot.. That was the first thing suggested, and I didn't even realize it worked =p

Also, I was reading through the thread because I couldn't remember what program I was going to use for this lmao... Turns out I didn't leave myself a clue, so yeah, no help there. I think I was going to use the update creator with Advanced Installer, but I have no idea.
