http://s3.fatwreck.com/498.htmlNo Use For A Name was a hugely influential band in my life. The first song that I heard by them was Justified Black Eye, and it immediately showed me that punk rock was more than just dirty kids with spiked leather jackets and safety-pin piercings. These were just regular people, playing music that had more meaning than most other music I had heard. They taught me that some (most) of the best music does not get regular radio play. They taught me that there were other people in the world that felt like I did. They were the reason that I wanted to be in a band. If it wasn't for NUFAN, I wouldn't have found out about other great bands from my teen years, like Lagwagon, Strung Out, or Me First. This news is very sudden, and I feel more sad about this than I could've expected. We never got a chance to play with NUFAN, but we did play with Good Riddance, and Tony Sly was there with them for that part of the tour. When I was doing my sound check, my friend Forest was standing off the stage with Tony and the drummer from GR. He told me that Tony Sly said, "This kid is good." to GR's drummer, and he responded with, "I know, I'm in trouble." Hearing that story, even third hand, somehow validated my decision to play the drums, and to be in a band. I hope wherever he is, he's at peace.
