Feel free to call me a dumbass for this thread. Recently, my parents found out about Google's new privacy policy changes and how they're now tracking you even moreso than before. Personally, I haven't really bothered to pay any attention to it, so I really don't know much about any of it, but from my parents description it doesn't sound particularly inviting. Unfortunately, I really don't have any good advice to give them to avoid being tracked aside from "don't use Google", which obviously isn't the greatest of advice given just how much Google stuff everyone uses on a daily basis.

Does anyone have any tips/advice/info that might help them out or at least relieve their tracking fears?

Would that even affect them at all? I don't think they have Google accounts to turn the history off from, or would really do anything to avoid being tracked still even if it was off.

It's completely optional for websites to honor that.

There are other search engines besides Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, too. They could always try using something like Duck Duck Go or Blekko if the tracking and bubbling done by Google is causing them to worry. Installing Adblock Plus in Firefox also helps block some of it. If they use Google Accounts for their e-mail, they can also use Thunderbird and access the account from it rather than from the Google website (although that one's really almost pointless).

Of course, if they're crazy paranoid, they can always firewall access to and from google.com and 1e100.net. ::)

I'm not sure how to react to that because I don't know which one of you posted it.

Unless otherwise stated, it would be safe to assume it's me, Eden. I'm the one that's mostly here anyway. Besides, shouldn't everyone be treating us just like any other member anyway? ;)

If it would make things clearer, though, I'd be happy to try to tag as many of my posts as I can... or whatever works for everyone else here.

Sucks that there doing that still those methods should stop them keeping history on you.
but there are ways you can stop surveillance outside of that, you could use SSH Tunneling, proxy's, Tor among other things its not full proof  it helps.
Information can be used for detrimental things if goes into the wrong hands.
Life Is just as clear

I'd recommend against TOR, personally, especially for average users. Tor can be a gigantic can of worms if the wrong nodes are accessed, the load times can be atrocious, and you'll find that your browsing is being sent through Sweden (with some humorous results at times). SSH tunnels can be pretty effective, though, assuming you have a reliable server to run the tunnel through. Much faster than TOR or any other proxies that I know of, too. That's far more generalized anti-tracking, though, and still awfully complicated for most people in my opinion.

This does nothing but hide the history from you. Google still keeps their own records.

No, just old-fashioned idiots. Also, why was this given a 10 month necropost by a new guy just to try to prove someone else wrong? :anski2:

Whoops, didn't notice. I just thought the information would be valuable for anyone who thought that they could look up bomb components anonymously, just by turning that off.
Also, thanks for the hug.  :D

btw there's a difference between trying to prove someone else wrong, and relaying the truth of the matter. 10 months old or now, this is a relevant matter. I don't 'go out of my way to prove people wrong.'

Helping myself what?

I'm just simply explaining why I did what I did. You can take it or leave it, doesn't matter to me.
