DESORIAN CHRONICLES: DOMINANCE

STORY BRIEFING
Spoiler for Click here!:

Young Will was just like any other 15 year old. He played video games, participated in the coolest sports, didn't care about school, and had no girlfriend whatsoever. One completely typical night, Will purchased an RPG Game for his gaming console, and decided to play for as long as he could stay awake. The tired teen eventually decides to go to bed. While brushing his teeth, something happens. Something he cannot explain. Now, he is stuck in a world similar to his own planet Earth, but is filled with the features that every adventure-hungry young man could ever ask for: Magic, monsters, and women in scandalous clothing!

Will soon meets up with some strange friends, and learns that there's more to life then just living it the way he's been living it. He and his new friends, Whitney, Rena, and Leslie, also discover something that will impact their lives forever. They've discovered that, under the beautiful surface of their planet, "Alterrth", is a grim, bloodstained underbelly that nobody can prevent; only delay.

Themesius says, "The corruption will never die, because it is all around us."

CONFIRMED CHARACTERS

NOTE:
This section utilizes a stat scoring graph using X's and -'s. Here's a layout of how to read it:

X (Abysmal)
X-X (Low)
X-X-X (Average)
X-X-X-X (Strong)
X-X-X-X-X (Very Strong)

__________________________________________________________________________

THE HERO (CUSTOM-NAMED):
Age: 15
Hometown: -not listed-
Classes: Swordsman > Warrior > Knight
Weapons: Swords, Daggers, Heavy Swords

HP X-X-X-X
MP X
ATK X-X-X-X
DEF X-X-X
MAG X
AGI X-X-X

The hero of the game is unlike the others. He comes to their world by unknown means and just wants to go back home. He is a nervous, modest, sheltered boy who was brought up in an overprotective environment, and therefore, is not used to conflict. However, he's loved video games, and because of them, he's always wanted some excitement in his life.

In battle, the hero is quite versatile. He has lots of HP and Attack Power. His Defence is quite low, but is compensated with heavy armor. His Magic and Agility stats are quite low. His skills are rather straightforward, and offer little diversity.

WHITNEY
Age: 20
Hometown: Trespion
Classes: Healer > Priestess
Weapons: Bows, Claws, Maces/Blunt

HP X-X
MP X-X-X-X
ATK X
DEF X-X
MAG X-X-X-X
AGI X-X-X-X

Whitney is the princess of the county of Torsia. Since her brother died at an earlier age, she'll be the successor to the throne. Whitney has a "demon" inside of her (This is a world of less sophisticated technology. She actually has a clinical case of Bi-Polarity), and while she's usually a sweet, compassionate, caring girl, she can be quite rude, mean, or unnecessary.

In battle, Whitney has passable stats in Magic, Agility, and MP, but low in every other aspect. she makes up for this lack of stats in weapon diversity and skill potential. With her weapon types, she can cover every type of physical attack style, and with her healing and support abilities, she can prove to be very useful!

RENA
Age: 16
Hometown: Ollerado Town
Classes: Dragoon > Slayer
Weapons: Whips, spears, Heavy Swords

HP X-X
MP X-X-X
ATK X-X-X
DEF X-X
MAG X-X
AGI X-X

Rena is a wandering Dragoon from the volcanic town of Ollerado. She was raised lovingly, but taught with discipline. Therefore, even at sixteen, she is very mature and knows right from wrong. She wears her armor all the time, not even taking it off to bathe or sleep. Is there a mystery behind this suit of steel?

In battle, Rena has no optimal stats, but has decent Attack, Defense, and even has manageable MP. However, Rena is quite lacking in HP, Agility, and Magic. Rena is usually preferred over the Hero for a tank, despite her equal Defence. This is mostly because of her useful 50% reduction against any physical attack. Her ability to fight isn't as good as the Hero's, but better than Whitney's. She is the jack of all trades, but is a master in none of them. Her spears allow for powerful attacks, her Heavy Swords can give more Defense bonuses, and her whips allow her to attack TWICE per turn.

LESLIE
Age: 18
Hometown: Nouming
Classes: Incantationist > Arcanist
Weapons: Books, Feathers, Staves

HP X
MP X-X-X-X-X
ATK X
DEF X-X
MAG X-X-X-X-X
AGI X-X-X-X

Leslie is a rather different person from the others. Her attitude is quite dry: She may be humorous and friendly at one point, but one thing can set her off to be cold, cruel, and rude. Unlike Whitney, however, she usually has reason to make this emotional shift. She's also extremely apologetic and prone to guilt. Despite being prone to guilt, she has no sympathy for what she feels is beneath her. This being said, she's equally prone to sarcastic comments and side notes.

In battle, Leslie has incredibly high Magic, MP, and Agility, but incredibly low Attack, HP, and Defense. This makes Leslie rather frail, and any powerful attack will probably severely damage her, or even knock her down. Her real use comes into her elemental diversity in attacks. Her magical incantations summon forth the elements of nature for her control and manipulation: in most cases, for attacking opponents. These spells do tremendous damage, and are essential for taking down enemies who are heavily influenced by elements such as Fiya and Yeese.

Anyway, enjoy the demo, I guess. And don't worry, I was just too lazy to fix up the messy "About" option on the menu. I just wanted to get out what mattered: the gameplay.

To be honest, the graphics are bad, but they're custom, so, to be honest, I don't mind at all.

Nice job.

It's okay. I suppose the fact that they're custom-made shouldn't sugar-coat the fact that they aren't masterpieces. The art style is not for everyone, and they aren't meant to be pixelwork, just so everyone who reads this is clear.

If you picture opening a children's fairy tale book, and seeing the simplistic, cutesy cartoon design, then that's what I tried to achieve in visuals. That is, if I even achieved THAT much.  :o

I'd like some more opinions, please! A demo will be coming out in a few days, once my Internet Connection is strong enough to upload files. For the time being, anything any of you have to say about this project? Like I mentioned, any and all criticism and opinions are respected.

Demo is now available for download! Think of this as a late-Beta testing. I wanna make sure everything's okay in the demo, before I continue with the actual project.

Hey! Not knocking your artstyle, it's yours, and that's fine. What are you using right now? because it kinda looks like they were drawn in paint. it makes the custom art look fairly unprofessional, which detracts from the aesthetics.

Your style is fine but I think it would make it look better if you had cleaner less pixely lines, and would improve the overall quality of the game.

unless you were going for pixely lines? if so then you might want to try using the same color palette for the characters as the sprites.

Yes, MS Paint is what I use. I would use better programs that don't look lame and pixely, but all the good ones I've seen look like they cost money or seem complicated.

I'm more than happy to do remakes of the facesets if it improves the visuals, because, while I love utilizing my art style, it's not pulled off well on a horrid program like Paint.

If you had any ideas for a better program that is free / cheap, would you be able to direct me to one? :)

Gimp has more features, I don't personally care for it but it is significantly better than paint.

more complicated programs are better they take a bit to learn but the payoff is what makes them worthwhile.

then again there's always photoshop, if you know where to find it.

GIMP huh? So I assume it makes a more smooth, vector-based line with a brush, rather than pixels? I'll definitely look into it tomorrow. Thank you very much! I want my game to play well, and look as nice as possible.

Crap, I just played through the demo last night. There's a major boat glitch. ;-;

Please ignore that, seeing as it spoils all of the gracious fun of the demo, and also because it's an easy fix.. I'll be sure to fix it up once I get back from classes today.

Have fun!

EDIT: Fixed it up! I'm almost positive that this demo is bug-free now. Everyone enjoy the content! I'l start working on the game again after Finals, so in about two weeks.

Also, GIMP is okay, but use Paint.NET. Its basically a free version of Photoshop.Ive used both and there very similar

Good question, because I can see why this may be thought.

No, this is not a joke game. I've wanted to include humor into this game, but not just typical humor that is cliche and unfunny. Lots of times, the actual mechanics of the game are joked at, and breaking the fourth wall is also a joke used a few times in the game so far. Some characters even develop inside jokes with each other, based on experiences they share. If there's one thing I wanted to include into this game before anything else, it was shots at humor and personality.

Also, I've started using GIMP, and am goofing around with it to get familiar with the program. I would use Paint.NET, but it looks a bit complicated. I want to take my improvements one step at a time, you know?

are killer dairy products any goofier than the stuff in earthbound?

was earthbound an awesome game? yes. it was.

I totally agree that not every rpg maker game has to be serious, provided the quirky humor is done well.

I haven't played the demo and can't really claim to know narwhals that well but I wouldn't dismiss the game as a joke game over some silly stuff.

Hey RMRK! Sorry I've been gone for a while. I just wanted to take a little leave to explore some other hobbies and such. I'm 15 years old, I wanted to try something new; sue me. :3

Anyway, I'm still going along with Desorian Chronicles. It's still a blast to work on, and I'm really starting to enjoy the look of it! The view of it strictly as a minor pastime is still in effect, meaning that the development is slow. I think it's better this way, since I won't do a bunch at once, and then abandon it, which many beginning users of the program do. If I go at a steady pace, then my motivation will stay just as steady. :)

Need some screenshots to quench that Desorian thirst (Lol, probably not)? Never fear! I come bearing gifts.

Spoiler for "MY GIFTS":

Here's a big island in the middle of the first world map. This is a giant dungeon filled with different layers of terrain, from forests, to canyons, to mountains, to snowy areas. Get through all of the areas to get to the treasure on the inside! This is more of one of those things you can do after you beat the game. I plan to make this place HUGE (Well, in proportion to the game itself, which is about 20-32 rooms, or 5 to 8 rooms of each terrain).

Here's a sneak peek at a new area I'm designing, as we speak! A snowy place. Every RPG has a snowy world, right? This snowy place actually houses an abandoned factory for manufacturing ships and boats. There's quite a hefty task for the hero and his crew to achieve inside...

A screenshot of the second world map in the game. Only one more after this! This one seems a little empty, but only because this world map is more of an actual level in itself. You'll be unlocking secrets from the worlds on this map that will have a direct impact on this world map, itself! Water exploration is also crucial here.

It may seem like a boring old rest stop by the beach, but this tiny slice of redemption plays a huge role a little lter in the game's story. A very important decision is made and acted upon here.

I hope you all remember this project! I encourage you to download the demo, if you haven't, already. It'll give you a taste of what to expect.

To be honest, the first island you posted was, well, artificial. Make the nature of your maps random unless they are supposed to be man-made. Also, and I don't mean to attack you at all, but one rarely sees mountain ranges in an almost perfect diamond that goes straight from grassy mountains to desert, then earth and snow. Vary more, bro.

The game looks great, btw! Great concept.

Actually, it's weird that you mention that, because I deliberately made the island very geometric, in that sense. The heroes would actually comment on it once they got to the center.

But I understand if the perfect diamond makes it look unnatural and awkward. Nothing a few map changes can't fix!

Thanks for the input. :)

Ah, that makes sense. It would've been nice to know before I critiqued it ;9. Having heroes point out the easter eggs you put in your game is a really interesting, if not cliched way of letting the player know why you've done something comparatively weird. It would work if you did that.

The plot seemed a bit cliche at first glance, but the way you wrapped it up makes it seem a bit different which is very good. I like how you implemented custom graphics into the game although they aren't the best it still means a lot to put in the effort. The only real problem I see (not really a problem but it stands out)  is that your maps are fairly blank, nonetheless I shall play the game later today and get back to you.

Thanks! Demo gameplay will help with more criticism, hopefully. I like all the opinions I can get!

I'm slowly learning Gimp and Macromedia Fireworks, as we speak. Although, frankly, I'm too lazy to remake the graphics for this game, I'll be making the sequel's graphics in GIMP, and judging by the looks of some samples, the graphics will be vastly improved in the second one. This first game is more to test a formula, storyline, and general gameplay for the game, seeing as I feel gameplay and storyline should never be sacrificed for visuals. :)

And yes, my mapping is a little sub-par, I'll gladly admit. Hopefully I'm improving a little at a time. I'm always scared of filling up the worlds too much. :$

To be honest I think the custom stuff looks horrible, when placed next to the RTP. Make your own tile sets, and the art style will come to life. Just looking at the sprites alone, without the RTP, they look cool. I love the MSpaint look. Make some custom tile sets and this will be golden.

By the way, I'm also attempting to make my own custom graphics. It's not hard, it just takes some time.

Custom tilesets, huh? That's pretty ambitious. There's no timeframe for this game really, but an entire overhaul on all four tilesets? That would definitely be time-consuming...

It sounds doubtful to actually happen, but I may look into it and implement it, or put it into the sequel.
