Flixel is a flash game engine written in actionscript 3. Games can be developed for it without the use of the Flash environment provided you have the correct compiler.

Everything you need to create any sort of 2D pixel based game is included(except the graphics). Included with Flixel is the source code of a quaint little platformer developed by the engine's creator.

All you need to start making games with it is an actionscript editor (I recomend Flash Develop. This does take some setting up but its realatively simple.) and some graphics do not worry about the sizes. Flixel can cope with most. It struggles with vector based graphics so stick to pixel art :D

Examples of games created:

So, it's like a Cave Story level editor?

No!. Its a game engine for flash. Fathom is inspired by cavestory. Play mode/queens they have original ideas. Read the whole topic :D

I know, I was just messing with you. I saw this bingo card for homebrew games once, and one of the squares was "Is Cave Story". This made me think of that.
