Party question

I need help with something. Let me explain. Say I have 2 characters in my party. After a while they reach lvl 3 and they both get better equipment. Then one of the characters has to leave the party. After a while that character rejoins the party. My problem is that when that character rejoins the party all of his equipment and stats/lvl reset so he is lvl 1 and has all of his starting equipment. How do I make it so when he rejoins the party he is still lvl 3 and still has all of his equipment that he had when he left the party?
