Sprite and Tile Making Tools

RPG maker xp is distinctly laking in sprites and tiles. I want to make my own, and want a good, free (contradiction in terms) program. It would be preferable to be easy to use, anything complicated will break my brain, and I usually need that. Any suggestions

I did end up finding some in the forum. I've downloaded graphics gale, and it seems ok, a little intimidating though. I've also realized that this topic is beat to death, so sorry about that.
