[2003] NetHack style game?

Is it possible with 2003? If you don't know what NetHack is, DOWNLOAD IT NOW. Best game EVER made.

Basically, the concept is that you start in a small little room with no items except maybe a small sword.
The entire map is black except this room. As you leave the room, through an opening, the areas that you explore become visible, and remain visible. The rest of the map is black until you explore the areas. There are doors that need to be kicked down.

As you progress, there are enemies that you can encounter (I would probably just use the default RM2k3 battle system for this instead of the style that NetHack uses).

There are traps (hidden) throughout the map. When you find that you can't explore any more areas, there are stairways leading up or down to higher and lower areas on the map, therefore loading a whole new map (all black, except the one room that you're in, of course).

So basically what I want to do is have a normal RM2k3 game with a shadowed-ish black map, and a simplistic tileset to go along with it.

The tileset I can find on my own.
It's the blackness that I can't figure out how to implement.

This HAS to be 2k3, mind you.

Well, if you used like, a lot of events and switches, you could make it so that hitting a certain event turned on a switch, and that switch would turn off other events that represent that blackness via pictures.

Or you could use a frame around the character so that only a certain area was visible, but then the areas previously explored would not remain visible.

Hmm. I like your first idea. I think I'll try it.

I actually decided to wait to attempt this until the final release of the English version of RMVX comes out. I think it'll come out better this way. = )
