ABOUT THE GAME

Maia 2K8 is a reincarnation of the Maia series. The names and people are the same. Their roles have changed into being a reincarnation on a different world put in danger by a tear between two worlds.

This game offers a free form unlike any other; a very adaptive personal story. From the birth of the player's character you enter the name, and specify where the character's father is during the birth. The older brother and sister are then asked for their reaction over the player character's birth. This affects they way they feel about the player's character from the start.

When the player’s character jumps ahead into school age, the character is aloud to visit instructors of the town of birth. These instructors will teach the player skills according to the class of the instructor. Once the player’s character has learned five skills, the character graduates and assigns their own class.

After graduation, the player’s character will then assign their own look based on the character’s gender. Each look has a stereotype and will be seen in a certain way to the general public. If the player’s character looks like a thief, the character will not be liked by those that fight. If the player’s character looks like a nun, the church will be more generous to the character. Stereotypes can be overcome such as a priest can become a mighty warrior respected by the guild of fighters with a little work.

Through performing good deeds or evil ones, the character’s prestige will raise or lower. Some will bow before a prestigious character, while others may not be impressed if not try to assassinate a character that seems like royalty. With prestige comes rank as well. There are many factions, each with ranks for completing quests, deeds and duties for the faction. The player’s character also gains respect when being educated by members of a faction in school. Not all factions are accepting of new members until the player’s character has earned the respect of the faction. Not all people will sell goods, skills and services to those with poor prestige. In fact, dark magic will only be taught to those that have negative prestige. Even knowing dark magic makes any character feared!

Faction members will fight along side of the player’s character and rival members will fight against the player’s faction if not simply disrespect the player’s character at every opportunity.

Along with prestige is the character’s bounty. Break the law by stealing, murdering or other offenses and society will not look with a smile to the player’s character. There are however people on the other side of the law that will praise those that break the laws of the human kingdom.

There are multiple races, both hostile and friendly; each having their own system of law. If the law is broken in the human kingdom, only the human guards and legions will uphold it. Break the law of another race though and the player’s entire party might find themselves at the end of sharp blades, teeth or swords!

With races, prestige, factions and bounties there are relationships; Love, Friendships, hatreds, rivalries, loyalties and family. Through dates, respect, journeys and quests together the player’s character can make bonds with several people along the way. The player starts out with three family relationships; a mother, a brother and a sister, but along the way there are many other relationships that have highs and lows; Love and bitter hatreds.


CURRENT FEATURES IMPLAMENTED
ALPHA 1 FEATURES
- Free From Game Play: You are free to chose your own destiny. Your education, class, gender and name are all your own choice through the new education system. You are free to chose which quests to complete or participate in. Every action has a reaction.
- Adaptive Story: For each choice you make it will adapt the story to your character. Your choices will change the story and how others react to you. Gain allies or make enemies through personalities, prestiege, factions and even classes. Some classes are not as respected as others. Some factions are hated by others.
- Education: When the player begins the game, part of the free form game play is learning skills from multiple instructors in order to create a more custom experience.
- Stereotypes: With everything there are stereotypes. When you select a look for your character you will receive a stereotype that comes with it. Such as if you look like a mage, other mages will be accepting of you, while fighters might not. Having a darker look will make people fear you. However all of these stereotypes may be over come with a little effort. It adds to the game play dynamic with the NPCs.
- Greetings: Now each NPC is assigned a name, faction, class and presteige. Each will greet you differently based on their faction, your faction, their class, your class, thier prestiege and your prestiege.
- Advanced Talking: You can now ask simple questions to NPCs and learn about their lives and their jobs. There is a standard talk, after the greeting, but there are questions to ask the NPCs as well.
- Factions: Yes they are back... with a vengeance. Guild of Fighters, Guild of Mages, Guild of Thieves, the Clergy and the Legion to name the major ones. Members of factions will aknowledge you as such and even according to your rank. You can also take fellow members with you on quests; assuming they like you enough. When going through the education process of the game you can get instructed by a trainer from the Guild if Fighters as a protoge or learn how to heal from a nun in the Clergy. This will help you get your foot in the door of a faction even before you join them.
- Duels: Oh yes the duels are back as well. This time you can challenge virtually any NPC to a duel! They must accept first of course. With duels comes risks and rewards. Kill a thief and get bolstered by the fighters and legion. Duel with the wrong member of a faction and they will hate you if not all try to kill you.
- Day / Night System: The game ticks time away throughout the day differently than Maia 2K7. More intelligently, but there are still seven time periods a day. Most shops close each night, but when the sun goes down a different sort of cast comes out!
- Lock Picking: For any locked door or treasure chest in the world there are lock picks that can open them with a little luck or skill.
- Stealing / Theft: Normally if a player were to take an item, no one would care, but to add some realism and stealth. There are now laws and people to see the player steal things.
- Bounty System: For each crime the player commits it will add a bounty to the player's head. Theft adds a small bounty, but murder adds a large bounty!
- Reaction System: NPCs react differently when a player has a bounty on his or her head. NPCs also react differently to the player's personality and prestiege that their character carries. Some NPCs will refuse to talk with the player, others run away and still others try to collect the bounty in combat!
- Multiple Races: There are different races that inhabit the world. Some are more hostile than others. You can gain their respect and trust over time. Each race has its own set of laws, such as only the humans uphold the bounty system. Other races do not, but instead they have their own laws and consiquences.
- Calculated Weather: The weather system works on five variables: rain / storm / snow / fog / sand storm. The game intelligently creates weather based on the region.
- Inn: Not just an Inn, but you get a room to stay in for the night to sleep, party or use however you want.
- Traveling Merchants: Traveling merchants are random, but when they appear they can save you in the wild.
- Movable Objects: If you are strong enough you can push barrels and boxes or destroy them!
- Destructable Objects: Douse fires with water bombs! Use plant slices to cut down bushes and pick flowers.
- Random Lootable Houses: As somewhat of a mini game for theives with lock picks. There are houses that can be looted. The interiors are random.

ALPHA 2 FEATURES
- After Life: In a game with an after world... there is after life. The entire point of the game is the player and Maia entering the realm of the dead. Thus meaning there is no true death in the game. Probably for the first time in any RPG ever; When you die in battle you do not go to a game over. You literally go to the realm of the dead and keep playing until you either find a way out or get pulled back into the world of the living by a priest that ressurects you. Once you are ressurected the normal game continues, but as punnishment the player loses half of their gold... you could always load a saved game if you have a problem with that.
- Detailed Ressurection: Churches have priests that will ressurect dead party members for a fee.
- Time Ticks By: With the day and night system comes the time system itself. Unlike the two previous games, this game time ticks by when in the over world. The previous two games had time tick away as you stood there doing nothing. That made the game itself slow. The new system for time will reduce lag and slow play.
- Dreams: Like in the two previous games there are dreams. However, now there is more to do and the dreams get deeper, but if you don't want to do anything with a dream, just stand there for 10 seconds and the dream will fade. You can also combat in dreams now! The in game dreams are foreshadows or memories based on past experiences. If you die in a dream you merely wake up.
- Gifts: Because there are relationships in the game, if you ever get someone so angry that they will not talk to you, but you need them for something... give them a gift! There are an assortment of gifts like pets, flowers, drinks and so on. Even offer to take them fishing! However based on who they are, they will react differently.
- Dancing: Yes indeed it is back! You and your date can indeed go dancing, where you need to mirror your date or fail trying. This time you know where to start from, and the dance continues with 5 rounds of action that your date will judge you on! Also this time you have a choice to keep dancing or end the date.
- Transports and adaptive prices: Yeah exactly what it says. There are now transports and based on what factions you are in they will either charge you more or less.

There will be more features all from Maia 2K7, but improved and streamlined.

BASIC STORY

Maia is the only person to have ever broken through the living plane into the realm of the dead and return again. After defeating the lord of the damned Malcius, she broke through a hole in the sky and plunged down to the world only to discover her mission was in vein. She had let her love slip through her fingers and returned to the world of the living alone.

Weak, weary, bruised and emotionally broken from her journey, she is found by a stranger that helps her; a stranger that had heard a prophecy of her return to the living plane. With the help of this stranger, Maia will return to the realm of the dead to save her love. This time Malcius will not be taken by surprise and he will have his legion of demons, undead and terrifying minions rallied to keep her soul.

The legion of undead are no longer confined to their realm. With Maia’s return to the living plane, the hole was left open; a hole that will turn into a tear between the two planes that will allow the dead to flow into the living. Aided by a reaper named Sekio, Malcius will have his revenge on Maia by conquering the world of the living. Meanwhile with the help of a new ally, Maia will find a way back into the realm of the dead to save her love.

Five of the major characters are customizable and adaptable to the game play experience. Those five characters (Player, Brother, Sister, Mother, Father) will not be listed because of this.

She failed in her mission, but undaunted she will return to the realm of the dead to complete it with the help of a stranger that will accompany her on her quest to save her love and repair the damage that was done when she escaped the realm.

CASTLE VELOIT

The front of the castle looks a little boxy. I might go back and change it. The guards attack if you have a bounty.

Pushing a few boxes, vases or other objects will get you further into the towers.

You can get lost very easily in these woods. However, you can stick to the path!


EARTH CAVE

The main chamber of the cave. The stairs overlook an underground lake.


Follow the paths and you may not get lost or even bring a lantern to guide your way.


So many directions to take.

The demo is maybe 30 minutes long and that is me playing it and knowing what to do. I will post a demo soon. Probably within 18 hours of this post right now.

It has 1 town, 1 village, 2 bridges, 1 lighthouse. You can go through all of the customization, education, graduation, and there are 3 quests so far. All the hard stuff is already programmed / scripted. Now I just need to make the story / dialog / quests.

I just uploaded the alpha demo. It is still free form. 1 town, 1 village, 1 grand forest, 1 earth cave, 1 lighthouse with exterior, 2 bridges.

In the demo you go through the education process. You raise the player and you can play the first main quest. The only catch is you cannot beat the first quest due to the fact there really is no armor or weapons. Everything is sold for 0.

You can steal things, fish, lock pick, duel (not many people), push boxes and barrels, cut flowers with a skill, watch time go by and commit crimes.

WHAT I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW:

Are the instructions for the player's education clear enough?

How do you like the greeting system. Each NPC greets the player, before the choice of what to do next with each NPC.

How do you like the fact that you can chose between talking, information, rumors and duel for each and every person you speak with?

After you complete the education and "graduate" there is a town navagator that instantly warps you to a place in town. Is that an annoying feature?

After you graduate and start the main quest and have your brother and sister join the part... what classes are they? They have about 12 different classes each that they can be based on your reputation with the guilds.

Also, when i talk to mom and this one lady the game restarts on me. But this is just with them so far.

Overall though, still fun going back to play some more.

I wanted to elaborate more on the "warp."

Towns move slower... So when you enter a town, it asks you where you want to go. Business district, residential district, pub / inn and your house (if you don't live in town it will be the church).

Also, when i talk to mom and this one lady the game restarts on me. But this is just with them so far.

Which lady? How does it restart the game? Does it kick you to the menu?

The map is only 70x60, but there is a lot going on.

I've never seen the screen freeze or go to the title screen ever. I will check it out soon :-) I know the lady you speak of. She's in front of the pub / inn.

The lady with the red hair, by the fountain and guard.

Screen freezes for 2 seconds, then goes black then Title Screen.

I just checked and it does not freeze for me. There is nothing there are no commands that would make it go back to the Title Screen either. Are you an adult when it happens or still a kid? Have you seen it again?

I am in LOVE with this game. It is so good I just had to tell you. I really love the talk system. The whole thing is great.

Script Refrence? That should not be an error, because first you give the player a name. Then using the exact same default came with RPG XP you name the sister. The only different reference is player is #1. Sister is #2. Brother is #3. What are you trying to name the sister? I know that if you leave the little girl as the default name, it loops through until you name her something other than the default name.

That is a little strange, but at least it is not getting the weird errors like it did with Willa & Rott.

Now that I think about it... maybe it's the anti-lag script. That is the only script I used.

Why thank you. Actually the screens are usually outdated by the time they get uploaded. I take a look at them and if they look empty, boxy or undetailed I go back and detail them. One thing is for sure... there are barely any NPCs when I do the photos. Just cause I haven't added them. I've greatly changed the overworld map, just to make it less boxy.

Thank you! I am glad someone noticed! There are more (of the Misery Myer and Wailing Woods), but I already have an excessive amount! Especially for me with a 56 Kbps modem.

Sorry for a double post like this...

AFTER LIFE

I have come up with an after life system. For the first time probably in any RPG... when you die in battle or die in general, you will go to an afterworld. The realm of the dead, where you will exist for a brief while until you find the portal to make it back to the realm of the living or until a priest pulls you out by ressurecting you :-) For getting ressurected the priest will take half of your gold ala Dragon Warrior.

I am extremely proud of this system and it keeps the game flowing instead of... restart from a saved game.

That's what happened to A LOT of people playing Willa & Rott. Maybe I just shouldn't use any scripts. Now that I think about it. There is only one script.

UPDATE

So this is an update. I thought that I would put it here, so the screen shots do not get excessive on the first page. I have even updated the screen shots on the original post, to show how things have changed.

I have even created a back story to describe the game's mythology. Here it is.

MYTHOLOGY

Spoiler for:

Before there was death, misery and despair; even before Terrenia was born, there were only the heavens. The realm of the angels, a place made of clouds, vapors and stars to provide them with heat and light from the darkness of space.

Inhabiting the heavens were the first beings in existence. They are called the Oxydales, but since then have been dubbed angels. Without wings or a physical form, the Oxydales were formed out of a collection of vapors that have been given consciousness by the Creator.

The Oxydales are immortal and everlasting; unable to be wounded or harmed at all, being that they lack a physical form. They lived in perfect harmony in their realm; that is until the Oxydales began to pair together. Their mating process bonded their vaporous molecules together and created a single being.

The solid beings were considered to be offspring that they called Carbodans. Their realm of gas and vapor was unable to sustain the Carbodans, so an Oxydale called Titas created a world from a rogue asteroid that shot across the cosmos.

The world was tiny, and superheated by the power of Titus into a world of molten rock with only a few shores of cooled rock. Smaller asteroids slammed into Hemonia leaving deep craters and filling the atmosphere with dust from the shattered asteroids creating a barely breathable and turbulent atmosphere that consisted of red dust and black ash.

Unaware what the needs of their offspring were, the Oxydales placed their offspring on the new world that was dubbed Hemonia only to find that the Carbodans could not physically sustain themselves. The newborn flesh was scorched off to black meat. Their open wounds were invaded by the harsh atmosphere that consumed them and turned them into beings of low intelligence.

Even creatures of low intelligence knew how to procreate ant the first offspring of the Carbodans was a terrible mutant named Malcius. His body was covered with thick scales, his head had horns and his fingers were claws. This mutation was merely one of many that followed after him. Everything from terrifying winged Carbodans to bulbous thick skinned Carbodans.

Malcius was not only the first born on Hemonia, but he was the first to speak to the Oxydales that had condemned the Carbodans to such an inhospitable world. The Oxydales had no concept of pain, grief or despair as they have no solid form.

As years passed, the body of Malcius transformed from one stage of his life to another. With each shedding of his scales, there was something new beneath of them, until he finally had a pair of gigantic black wings and a mouth full of sharp teeth meant for eating Carbodans.

Malcius flew out of the atmosphere of Hemonia and soared to the realm of the angels. He had adapted with each transformation until he could breathe the gasses of the heavenly realm. When face to face with the Oxydales, he asked them how they could condemn the Carbodans to such a horrible realm.

The Oxydales had no understanding of the harsh environment and that further enraged the enormous Malcius who flapped his giant wings and began to blow the realm into pieces. The clouds dissipated, and the vaporous Oxydales flew apart into oblivious. The majority of the populous was annihilated single handedly by Malcius who had no remorse.

In order to stop the enormous Malcius, the Oxydales combine their might and became a cloud of acid that ate away the giant black wings of Malcius. Without wings to fly on, Malcius spun through the empty cosmos of space, until he finally crashed back into Hemonia.

The Oxydales that had survived demanded that Titas find a better asteroid, a bigger asteroid to forge a better world for the Carbodans. They wanted him to create world that would be more hospitable to their flesh and would not cause their children to be mutated. With the help of Geodonas, Titas built a new world. This time, with the wisdom and artistic creativity of Geodonas, the world was beautiful. It began with a molten super hot atmosphere, but then generations of cooling from the winds of the heavens cooled it into a paradise fit for the Carbodans.

The new world was called Terrenia, and as it was being forged, the enormous Malcius grew in power, size and mass. The once winged Carbodan had tripled in size and conquered the entire world of Hemonia with the help of a demonic army of mutants.

The majority of Carbodans on Hemonia followed the will of Malcius, if they did not obey, they were hunted and devoured. The Oxydales could see the terror that Malcius had created on the already turbulent world and they warned Terrenia that all who did not please the Oxydales would be shifted onto Hemonia and devoured by Malcius.

As the Oxydales were immortal, the only way to displease them was death. It was not comprehendible to the immortal beings and in their infinite power; the Oxydales could reanimate those of Terrenia. The Oxydales justified that if the Terrenians died once, they would die again, so as punishment they were to live again on Hemonia where Malcius would devour them..

To those on Terrenia, the world of Hemonia has been given many names. Some call it the Afterworld; others have labeled it the realm of the dead. No one speaks the true name of Hemonia, because to speak it may frighten them to death.

Terrenian’s on Hemonia with precious skin had it burnt away by the harsh atmosphere just as the Carbodans. The populous of Hemonia kept growing, and eventually Malcius discovered that they were being siphoned from a new world. The world of the living, called Terrenia.

Malcius vowed to conquer the world of the living as well, not only to spite the Oxydales, but to let them know there would be no place safe for their offspring to hide from him.

After centuries of searching for a way to get into the living world of Terrenia, Malcius has finally heard of six orbs that combine elements of Terrenia. The orbs were placed by the Creator to merge the two worlds together.

When the six orbs merge as one giant gelatinous orb and get thrown into the mouth of the volcano of Burning Eye, it will create a gravitational force to pull Hemonia. The force would be great enough to pull Hemonia into the center of Terrenia merging the two worlds with Hemonia inside of Terrenia.

The orbs were purposely placed on Terrenia, so that only they could cause their own destruction. When the two worlds merge as one the impact will create a chain reaction of giant waves, and dust so thick that it will block out the sun for eons and will kill everything on both worlds leaving only the heavens and a dead Terrenia.

However, Malcius knows that only he would survive, because he is so enormous, powerful, unyielding to death and has survived decades without anything to breathe. He would live to torment whatever new race of people was to inhabit the world.

Untrusting of the competency of Terrenians, the Oxydales combine themselves to create six daughters that would defend and protect the orbs; thus defending the Terrenians from their own destruction. However, as Terrenians, the daughters fell pray to mortality and the conflicts of their emotions; their personal struggles to be good or evil.

The first daughters were twins, split from the same Carbodan. One was bathed in fire at her birth to give her the traits of that element. Her name is Fiera and fiercely defends her orb hidden within the navel or Terrenia.

Her twin Thundra has relinquished the duty of defending her orb in order to guard her people against the threat of a giant Terrenian race. Thundra has given the orb to a giant golden colossus to defend, far better than she ever could.

The third daughter born to defend an orb was named Gail. She is the most free spirited of the six daughters. She is so free spirited that when she found her orb, she traveled the world as defending it by moving it. However, Gail met her demise when she met a collective of hostile primitives and was sacrificed to their God; a wyvern.

The next daughter Serenity defends her orb in a peaceful calm; completely devoid of life and warmth. When she arrived to find the orb, the region had been a thriving paradise, balmy weather and the citizens barely clothed. Serenity froze the entire region in order to defend the orb.

The fifth daughter is Chaotica, who upon finding her orb has taken up residence beneath the oceans of Terrenia. She uses her powers to capsize ships and send harsh weather and hurricanes to all of the nearby lands.

The last sister born is the one that has chosen to live amongst the Terrenians. Not only live amongst them but rule them as their queen! At a young age she married the king of the land and after his death, she has remarried and vowed to take the responsibility of guarding all six orbs with her entire empire defending them.

This is how it has been for almost a generation now. The forces of Malcius try to convince the Terrenians to obtain the orbs. The daughters of Oxydale defend the orbs by slaughtering the Terrenians. And finally the Oxydales keep the balance to the Creator’s master plan for all of the realms and races.

These all look excellent. The story here and the story in the literature forum are all very compelling.

I have some questions though. If you made Maia 2K7 with RTP, and you're making Maia 2K8 with RTP and using the same stuff that was in the previous game. Why did you have to make the whole game over again? WHy not just add to the original game or use the system from the original game?

Cause it will not be RTP when it is done. The previous game's variables, items, armor and weapons were disasterously arranged with no thought put into it. Also the last game had a ticking time system that made the game immensely and intollerably slow. I no longer have a ticking time system. I do have a time system, but it is not real time like the last game.

The town has a lot going on in it. Sprites moving, things doing things. The last game was really complex with the scripts that also bogged it down. This game has less complex things to prevent the slow down, but yes towns will still be slower than other areas :-)

The game has come a long way in just this week alone. I did an intro / prelude, that has been described by 3 people as "intense." No one has ever seen anything like it in an old school RPG, and it does grab your attention and make you want to play :-)

Actually there is the town travel once you complete the education that will let you warp to 1 of 4 places in the towns. For the next version that comes out I've made it so you can use the town travel without completing the educational process. It actually takes a lot of time off the game :-)

I would do a run feature, but I would disable it if you had a bounty. After all if the guards cannot catch you what fun is that?

How it is looking this game is more crash heavy than Willa and Rott! What the heck? Does anyone else's games crash as much as mine? There is no reason why it should crash right there, but if it does... it does...

There probably shouldn't even be any point continuing on with the game, considering they cause crashes.

Your games have never crashed for me. I'm thinking that it must have something to do with their versions of RMXP. I don't know what version you use maia, but I'm guessing there must be some sort of incompatibility between your version and theirs.

That's the thing... the .exe is run completely independent and does not need RPG XP. I have friends that don't have RPG XP that can run the game on their computers.

User of RMXP postality knight edition doesn't require RGSS RTP to be installed to play the game, when they installed RTP, it will crash some game.
Also, if you're using postality edition, every RMXP(Enterbrain) user who have RTP installed sometimes make the game crash. This is RTP problem, although you didn't use RTP for the game....

Well...

This game has ballooned since I last posted any updates of real content. Each day the game has grown extensively. In fact to save myself a lot of play testing time... I created a cell phone in the game for my own use that allows me to warp, disable enemies, enable them, and jump to "episodes."

EPISODES

There are 5 episodes... episodes are the extensive parts of the main quest. By the time the game is done I hope there will be 50 episodes. Completing the 5 episodes takes me around 90 minutes and I am using the cell phone to warp around for testing purposes.

The episodes varry greatly and encompass... monster killing, dating, dancing, dealing with hostile lizards (Andarans), escaping Oni in a thrilling chase, seeing a world get ripped apart in a way that no old school RPG has ever had (it's been described as intense), picking your classes to develop your character, seeing monks get attacked by raiders, stealth in evading and saving a girl that falls from the sky.

SIDE QUESTS

There are about 16 side quests so far. With these side quests and 5 episodes the game totals 3 hours and 30 minutes of play time! That is without travel and without monster battles (except bosses and must do battles). With battles and travel time it would probably be 5 hours and 30 minutes to do the side quests so far.

Oh yeah and there are 7 puzzle quests. They aren't really quests, but puzzles that require hints so there is someone to give those hints. There are more puzzles, but with these 7 puzzles... you will learn how to solve the other puzzles in the game.

FACTIONS

There is 1 new dark guild for those players that like creating mischief! But be warned hang with the wrong company and it does affect you. The quests for the Den of Darkness are absolutely quirky when they are not simplistic in nature. Some quests are easy everything from find this and bring that to the nun hunt and releasing an oni fro a bottle in a pub!

The quests for the guild of fighters are done now, quests that varry from rescue missions, to escorts, to flat out killing things and challenging the bare fisted barbarian to one on one combat.

JOIN THE DARK SIDE, BE HATED, LOVED or FEARED

Now that I have played more than three hours into the game, I have gotten to see alliances develop, fears take shape, hatred grow and love dye. My character is now so hated in one of my 2 test games that the evil NPCs do not see me as a threat... they see me as one of them! Normally evil NPCs would attack on instinct, but if you are less prestiegeous than they are they will talk with you.

On a mission to accompany a man to get back his wife held by raiders. The raiders spoke to me and offered gold to abandon the mission.

NPCs accept duels based on their hatred for you, or refuse out of fear of what you will do to them!

SO MUCH IN A SMALL AREA

There are only about 15 areas. 1 town, 1 port, 1 castle, 1 village, 1 lighthouse, 3 bridges, 3 woods, 1 mire, 2 caves, 1 shrine. There are more areas, but they are not accessable at any time in the game. I would like to get the game to about 100 areas, but these 15 areas already contain about 120 maps, so I am not sure if it will be possible if the engine has a limit of 999 maps.

CLASS CATAGORIES

I have about 60 classes lined up in the game, and everything does evolve. There are three primary groups of classes. Combat, Magic and Stealth.

The combat branch starts everyone out as a brawler. Untrained with weapons and armor, but good with power and strength. They can upgrade to a Fighter and get trained with weapons and armor.

The next catagory is magic, where everyone starts out as a mage learning basic magic before they break off into other catagories. Black magic, white magic and illusion. From there it goes to even more detailed magical classes.

The final catagory is stealth where everyone starts out as a thief. The stealth catagory primarily relies on yep... stealth. Picking locks, conceiling themselves, picking pockets and stealing things.

QUIRKY CLASSES

Beyond the stereotypes there are quirky classes with their own powers. Such as the grappler, who cannot use any weapons, instead the grappler uses strength with skills. It takes a few levels for the grappler to learn moves, or even get strong with them, but the grappler is a slow, mythodical combatant capable of having entertaining fights. So entertaining and crowd pleasing there is a new combatant system. Instead of duels where the point is to kill your opponent, the point is to have an entertaining battle. A crowd pleasing battle that will give the spectators their money's worth.

Another quirky chracter is the gambler with unique skills and some other skills taken from another famous game gambler. The gambler allows the player to take a chance with fate as all of the gambler's skills are either good or bad. It just so happens to be luck of the draw with skills like the card draw that will have one of fifty-two random effects on opponents. The skill of coin toss will damage either the player's party or the monster party and the list goes on with skills, blackjack, roulette, slots, and the gambletron. I would go into detail, but this is long enough.

MULTIPLE PARTIES and MULTIPLE CHARACTERS

Because the game takes place on a few different planes of reality, there are different parties for different planes. The dream plane, the dead plane, the plane of the living known as Terrenia and the undead world of Hemonia. There are four parties at any given time that either through sleep, death, a cut scene or reality you get to play as them. Some are for a brief moment, others are for quests and the main one is your playing party on Terrenia.

On Terrenia there are many characters that will join your party. Either for dates, missions, quests, but once you have completed the initial quest where you meet the person you can have them join your party full time assuming that they like you enough. Each character gives you full control of them and they grow and change as you do in the game.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUEST-IONS

Like the previous Maia games. There is more than one way to complete a quest. Take for instance one quest where you must get an emerald...

A. Steal the emerald from the owner by either turning invisible, or breaking into his house late at night.
B. Kill the owner and steal the emerald.
C. Date him and have other members of your party steal the emerald for you.

Each quest has one or two ways to complete them! Some even have different outcomes based on your success, failure... or even taking an alternative to doing what you are supposed to. Like getting by villains to kill who you are supposed to protect.

DIALOG O PLENTY

Every dialog is written out before it is put into the game and so far there is 110 pages of dialog! That is almost a full length movie. Technically it is more than a full length movie considering movies have actions and details written out. This is just 110 pages of dialog.

MAPS:

These are most of the interesting maps from the first region and only the first region. I have edited this topic to take out the maps in region 2 like Port Shanalon. Also shown are maps from the after world of Hemonia, while they are technically not in region 1, you do visit them in the storyline that takes place in region 1.

Spoiler for:

REGION 1: HENAGRAD

This is a little south east of the dead center of the world, originally it was its own country, but when Queen Harmony began to conquer the world of Terrenia, then Henograd was one of the first countries to fall.



MIRRO CAVERNS

Locaded near the Misery Myer in the east this cavernesque location actually offers little freedom, because it zigs and zags like human intestine fitting a large amount of adventure into one compact space.



TERRAKAN CAVE

The cave north of Telegra offers an underground lake and many strange plants and mushrooms to study. It branches in many ways and offers many areas to explore with treasure chests to reward those that explore it all.



VELOIT CASTLE

Originally owned by King Veloit, this is now the place of Governor Allanson to conduct his business. The castle may look simple, but it is a labrynth of interior and exterior passages. Fortunately the game has a warp system to save the player a lot of time!



NEW CHURCH OF VALYON

The original church has been moved to the Shanagrad region. This church is large and home to the clergy in Henagrad. It offers a larger chapel that can pack in the populous of Henagrad. The old church could not do that. Also the exterior offers a lot to explore in the daytime and night. You will notice there is a graveyard in a field of flowers.



PORT TALRON

The only port in the Henagrad region with a boat that leaves to the Shanagrad region each morning. This port has a large population of sailors, pirates, and fishermen. Unfortunately it has its crime at night, taking your gold or your life. Either avoid them, make a pact with the guild of thieves or stay indoors at night.



TOWN OF VALYON

The birthtown of the player character complete with factions and a church to the north of town limits. The town offers great variety, fishing, cooking, alchemy. Just about everything that a player could learn to use, including a schooling system that will teach the player new techniques. The player is stuck in the town until graduation.



TELEGRA VILLAGE

This young village was built around a well that was at the crossroads between Valyon and Port Talron. It was constructed by the Andaran race of walking lizards.





... from here it gets to the parts that are not in the first region....



DREAMSCAPE

This is a mere nightmare with plenty to explore... before you wake up.



HEMONIA'S ABYSS

I have a lot to say... but I am not going to.

My comments on the maps are in the screenshot thread. But, this is the first time I've seen those updates in the post above. There are lots of great ideas in there. I love them. The amount of choice in the game is great and those classes seem very interesting. Great stuff  :D

One of your forest maps doesn't use the grass tile properly, other than that, I think some of your roads look strange.

In my opinion though, most of your errors and at the point where mapping doesn't matter (shitty mapping can impact a game, you're at the point where the mapping shouldn't impact the game at all).

ALPHA V2 SOON?

I think that I have the errors situation all calmed. The solution is not exactly tollerable to me right now. The game gets boost up to 37 MB. Which for my games that is beyond huge. I have unlimited abuse of a server (thanks to my friend), but I have dialup and I need to upload it! I would find the unneeded files and remove them.

I would also remove the intro for various reasons.

SHANAGRAD: REGION 2

Four weeks ago I left the first region for the second. A shard of the second continent. The southern most region of the massive second continent. This region is a wild and overtaken region with one town and a sprawling farm village. The region has been overtaken by the wilderness because there are no soldiers or guards here. It is a haven for lawbreakers, creatures, and other foes.

The second region (Shanagrad) consists of 10 areas, 1 port, 1 farm village, 1 lighthouse, 1 bridge, 1 giant marsh, 1 church 1 giant mountain pass, 1 tunnel to the 3rd region, 1 large forest and 1 network of tunnels in the mountain pass. The marsh is so massive that you do not even come back the same way that you go in, just so the map can be used twice and still be fresh. The mountain pass (Preston Pass) is a labrynth of rocks, tiers and levels.

With these new areas, the game now has over 200 maps. To counter act that fact... I have started doubling maps up. If I do not. I will quickly run out of maps by the limit of 999.

BIG MONEY BIG PRIZES

Iiiiiii love it! All of the little nooks and crannies in caves, on mountain passes or pretty much anywhere in the wilderness now has some reward for entering them. Like if you see a cliff with a stairway, but there is nothing on the cliff... why would you go up the cliff? Now there is a treasure or some point of interest. A reward.

There are several tiny use your intelligence to get treasures... treasures. Like slice down a bush or flower to get to a treasure. Push a treasure to open it. There are areas where you can CLEARLY see there is nothing there, making it pointless to see what there is... until you take a walk of faith and a treasure appears. These are all SMALL ways that improve the game. There are still grand puzzles though. These are just the simple ones.

MORE EPISODES

There are now an additional 5 episodes that run quicker than the first 5. In a way at least. These take longer to walk to, more enemies to wade through (assuming that you do not smart or stealth your way out of them). The characters get deeper, and those that might hate you... are needed.

I have more effectively streamlined each episode into 3 completable forms. Strength, Smarts, and Stealth. Each quest already had multiple ways to complete it, but now I have just given it a catchy phrase. Strength, Smarts, and Stealth. Sometimes the answers are not as obvious as they seem.

The first 5 episodes were very character driven, these new 5 are very thick in story, content and interest, just like the original 5 episodes on the first content. I would say more, but that would spoil it... maybe I will post in the writing forum.

PARTY OF 5

For a portion of the second region, you will have 5 in your party, but you will not be the slaughtering machine that you think you would be with 5 in the party.

CASH YOUR TOKENS

So far I have placed 5 of 100 tokens into the game world. These tokens are used for a giant game board. Ala Maia 2K3 and Dragon Warrior 3. The only trick is finding the tokens and finding where to use them for a fun and danger filled board.

One more thing. In play testing. I have enemies disabled except for bosses, and I have a nifty little item that lets me warp anywhere so I do not have to waste time with travel. If I RUSH through the game it is 3 hours with the main quests. If I complete all of the side quests it is 6 hours. That is for me, knowing where everything is, warping and no fighting. I would assume for everyone else that it might be 12 hours by now.

You could save it on a flashdrive,,and upload it from some school/college/library,,but then again,,driving to those places and back will take about the same amount of time as uploading 37 megs on dial up.  LoL.

This project is impressive, much more so than Maia 2k3 and Maia 2k7 (even if they were equally good).

I'd really love to see the new version uploaded and you probably should try another way to compress the stuff: 7 Zip compresses MUCH better than WinRAR or other similar tools and you'd probably should try it.

Just to say that later today I will be posting map shots from most of the areas in the second region. Actually I am going to go back to page 2 of this topic and edit it to show only maps from region 1. So that way it keeps everything nice and neat. There are new maps on page 2 that will be there. Like the church and a region map of the overworld.

Thank you oh so much :-) I know that Maia 2k3 was very difficult, and Maia 2k7 was counter productive giving players handicaps they must overcome in the first hour or two of gameplay. That just wasn't fun apparently, and heck going to school in this game might not be fun either in the first 15-20 minutes of the game. Luckily there is a dynamite intro with interesting techniques.

The archive it makes should be a lot smaller and you'd probably be able to upload it in notime. Let me know if it works.

MAPS:

These map shots were taken a few weeks ago. Since then things have been upgraded to be more detailed, but if they are not good, feel free to comment on them. Plus by taking early map shots it will not disrupt people's play of the game from knowing where everything is.

REGION 2: SHANAGRAD

I can tell this is a bit old, because the church is not even on the map. The church will be between Preston Pass and Shanalon. That huge blank land mass to the north west will be region 20 (probably).



PORT SHANALON

As seen originally in the previous post of maps, Port Shanalon is a coastline paradise. There are no guards at all, and it is considered a haven for the unwanted.



PRESTON PASS

Preston Pass is between Port Shanalon and the Maccan village. While you can take a simple pass through the valley, you can also climb the mountain itself and find all there is to find.



TUNNEL SYSTEM OF PRESTON PASS

This does look rather blank yes, but this is a shot I took for a friend 2 weeks ago. It has been detailed since with lilly pads, and... things... inside of the tunnel.





VILLAGE OF MACCAN

The only village and second populated area of the Shanagrad region encountered the scourge. A terrible disease that flowed in the rivers and infected the crops. There is a large graveyard full of the victims.





NEW CHURCH OF VALYON

I have swapped the Valyon church for the church in Shanalon. The first region with Valyon is much larger than the region with Shanalon :-) There is a good sized grave yard in the flower field and a good sized interior.



WOODS OF AQUANIA

There are tons of woods in this game, and I really don't want to show maps of woods, because they are... wooded areas and not much to them, but this is worth showing, because it gets flooded.



DONNOVAN'S WOODS

Like I said there are a lot of wooded areas in the game, but this one has a few places of interest. The cabin and the coastline.



BYER'S BOG

What did I say about woods? There are quite a lot, after all before we had cities there was just... woods... but this one that is so massive that you go one way when going north and another way coming south. I remember people saying my maps were too straight forward in previous games, so I made little branches, shortcuts and secret unmarked paths (most of which are north beyond the map shot) :-) It is so massive that it did not fit into the shot.



CORNOLLA TUNNEL

I am aware that I will run out of maps before the game is done! So I am having to double up on maps.

look vague and empty.  For Maccan,,some growing grass could really spice that overused green land tile.  Same goes for the church.  The bog has overused wooden stick graphics.


PORT SHANALON looks really cool.  Sand with green land seem to work really well together.

NNEL SYSTEM OF PRESTON PASS looks expertly done.

I love that AQUANIA map,,it really has that feeling of a sacred altar hidden in the woods.
