I noticed that there is a battle system built into the game, how easy is it to use? Are there predefined variables?

What are you using? RMXP or 2003? If Xp, then then the battle system is relitively easy to use. The battle system is run by scripts and if you'd like to consider that, then yes it has predefined variables. However, editing the battle system in the scripts is pretty difficult. There are plenty of scripts in the Scripts section that can change the default battle system
