I think you got the wrong program. This is for rpgs, in which you upgrade your character all the time and see him involve, and it's mostly a 3d game. For a 2d game, and especially for mario ones, i suggest you use gamemaker, which is also supoorted on this site. It's used for almost every kind of game, but it's kinda easy to make a platform game with it. It's a little more complicated then RPG maker, because you have to do some coding yourself, but if you want to make a platform game, thats THE program. There are also some very very very good tutorials on this site, where you can also download it ( a trial i thought):
