image problems

I am having trouble figuring out why some of my icons and some character images get that white background. Im wondering if its because i have more than 16 colors? Or because i have a color that replaced the background or what.

I had a trick to fix it in 2k3, but it doesnt seem to work in XP.

Im guessing someone knows the answer and its probobly really obvious, but any help would be much appreciative.

When you import it click on the background, when the image appears.

When you import it, click on the background with the left and right button when the image appears so that the filler color wont appear.
