How many levels or maps should a game have i need to know. ::)
You think so?

modern algebra

How long is the game? My game has a lot more then 25 maps, but mine is long. How long is yours?

Irock

I'd say anywhere from 200 to 999 maps.

:)

it shold have more then 50 at least! I mean a normal town of time takes 20 maps think about housees insides and then insides of houses having another room and so on.
Watch out for: HaloOfTheSun

King Anesis

Depends on what kind of game it is. A comedy/parody that has no real purpose is to be pretty small (50-200). The real long story-driven ones should be as much as 500+.

Anywhere from 50-1000 because of the scenes, towns, and special areas.

Kokowam

A lot of maps. XD I have a 5 map game but that's different. That was a quickie just for fun.

maia

Couldn't you just make one map with ALL the rooms? Of course these don't need to be connected but it'd work with just 2-3 lines of roof space, right? Just an idea, and I tried it with one game, but I had to stop working on that game so I haven't really tested it (scripting problems... I am a really bad scripter...)... So a town could have just 2 maps (Maybe 3 if it's one of those LARGE towns!
I wonder how many of my-reps are there for a reason, and not just because some jackass wanted to show off in front of some other jackasses...?
Probably a lot of them - and those people sure as hell don't deserve my pity, let alone my disgust.

I tried that... It will take an eternity, to be finished. Trust me.
Well, to get back to the topic, then I think that it should ATLEAST have 100 maps, if it's a story about something, and not something without a story.

There's no reason to have such big maps. If you wanted to put a lot of events in then it will cause lag without an anti-lag script. As well, you do not neccesarily want to map every interior in a town with the same tileset. I would give every house or building one map each. Otherwise it would be a total pain in the ass to go back and edit maps, because you have to find them in some gigantic interior map. But I never give one building more than one map unless it is like a castle or something.

I can't see any reason that it would take longer than making the interiors in separate maps.

What you're talking about sounds like what they did for Earthbound. EVERY map was actually part of one big map. Turn on a walk through walls cheat and you could easily walk anywhere. Depending on where you were, events would be active or inactive. You can find a full sized version of that map at starmen.net.

Like others said, it depends. On everything. There's no universal "minimum" or "maximum" - being restricted by that ideology can often end you worked up for the wrong reasons. There are also other factors that affect the number of maps beside the length and type - for example, separating one city into districts of separate maps makes navigating through it feel bigger, and vice versa.

Do what suits your game as an individual. The right amount of maps is the amount that gets the job at hand done right.

I think I get the idea, but that just sounds MAD! Anyway, isn't it only in test mode you can use Shift to go through walls? Ah well, I only meant for towns...  :D

i have 228 maps and i'm still at the ''beggining'' i have like 6 hours of gameplay so far. well ok there's my forest that takes 64 maps LOL but oh well(there's a village in it)

i say a complete normal decent game(lmao) would be around 300-400 maps.
i'm not saying a game that has 30 or 1000 maps would suck. that's just my opinion though.

mythus

I believe that a game should be a good, long game, with plenty of places to explore. That being said, IMHO, a completed RMXP game would have way more than 50 maps. But then again, I use maps for more than just in game explorations, but also for intro scenes, cut scenes, and the like.

50 maps or less would be hard press to give a truly in depth game that lasts more than 4 hours of game play.

lol not even. 50 maps can(depend) be like 15-20 mins of gameplay. in my game i have a 49 map forest. and there's battles in it of course, but beside that. it's just a maze lol. 49 maps = roughtly 30 mins rofl.with 220 maps i have 4-5 hours of gameplay =/ maybe 6 if you train a lot/get lost. haha XD

mythus

Perhaps lol, however you could conceivably make that forest just as long with less maps, by combining like maps into one larger map correct?

HolyQuebec

yes,of course.
same for the villages. lets say you have 8 houses. so 8 ''interior''(assuming there's no second floor)
you can just do a 100x100. do your rooms. separate them by black tiles or so. you save lot of maps that way.
but for the forest,i rather having many maps than 1. it makes the user feel like it's longer. if there's only one map,the user will be: 1 map and i'm done? wtf.
so ya. but that's only my point of vue i know some will be against it haha.

maia

I have a good question...

Is there a limit of 999 maps in the game?
community project for RPG Maker VX: http://rmrk.net/index.php/topic,33789.0.html

HolyQuebec

The limit is 999 maps... this is not good! My game is only 1/10th done and it's 120 maps!
