i got rpg maker 2003 and i can't get the fonts to work can somebody help me with that.  Also i want to know with the side battles if a person can actually go up to the enemy then hit them instead of staying far away and hitting them

For the font problem go to your program files\rpg2003 (Or wherever you installed it) and go to the fonts folder, copy the fonts and paste them in your windows\fonts folder.

About your second question, yes if you manipulate and edit the battle animations to have the character move and attack.
