I think motst of school is useless enless you are going into that field. For instance math anything past algebra 1 is totally useless unless you are going into that field.

Not at all. I, as a future programmer need a lot of maths. When we were going through geometry and trigonometric functions I thought "I won't ever need that. Why do I have to learn that shit?!" It's similar now with differential equations. You know the effect when water splashes up if something falls into it? Those are numerous of differential equations that make this effect possible. You can't build a house without math. You need to calculate the statics of the material you're using and possible disruptions. Msth is all around us, even if you don't notice. I think I'm not going to far if I say more than 99% of the technology and anything else wouldn't have been possible without math.
Don't get me wrong, I can't stand math as well. (>.<)

Ok good point but alot of the math you were talking about could be acomplished with a lower math than Trig. And even if the couldn't or required more then do you think that math should only be taken as an elective and be forced up to tenth grade

More man than everyone here put together.
Nothing is useless and nothing is more important than anything else.

School time restrictions however are useless, they prevent the slow kids from learning and they prevent the brighter kids from fully using their potential.

They also don't focus enough on the arts, which in turn results in unsofisticated people. (sports-nerds)
The opposite of intelligence is not stupidity, it's patriotism.

It isn't useless. It still exercises your brain no matter if you go to culinary college, Law School, or become a high school drop-out.

I agree with Elegy. But there is not enough time and money to educate each person individually. =/

learning stuff ur not necessarily going to use makes u a more rounded person, and if later in life, say u decide u lifelong dream is really to be an engineer (which uses alot of math) and now u have only a algebra I grasp on math ur going to be doing a lot of work to catch-up to that point.

also, learning stuff difficult like math makes u more adept at challenging urself to take in and accommodate new information, as opposed to just assimilating everything u see.  math also teaches value problem solving skills, so despite whatever field ur going into, that skill will be useful.

I see your point but how do you think that we should improve the school patterns or if we should have an elective that we don't already have.

math is vitally important in improving our ability to learn so i dont think it should be elective.

i'm not sure what u meant by school pattern...

most problems with the amount of options given for electives, like art electives, are cause because of a lack of federal funding for the schools.  if u really feel their needs to be better art programs...take it up with politicians.

I agree with Elegy on that point too. I had a horrible time at high school, it's not exactly an easy place to learn in, ironic I guess...

But many public schools in Australia have taken up that notion, they now teach students a trade ( carpenter, electronic, etc... ) rather then the normal "higher" education, sad really, although it's needed it's practically telling the kids that they should just give up.

Would I be correct in guessing you're still in school?

You sound just like the typical schoolkid who thinks studying sucks and why bother learning math if we have calculators etc.

You're not just learning only the subject matter, it's helping you gain ingenuity. I can't even remember most of the math I was taught, but I could get pretty far through a problem before needing any help, and maybe even not need any at all.

It's true what Silverline says. If you've already seen the kind of problem it's easier to recall it later. Like "Wait... How did those trigonometric functions work...?". It's easier to recall stuff then learn it from the beginning on. =/

School is only useless if you don't care about doing well in it. People who want to learn things will find it more rewarding. Having someone show you how things work is a huge help to me, because I can make myself capable of doing it myself after that. Homework, on the other hand, is mostly a waste of time. If you learn by repetition, that's fine. Do what you have to do to learn. Anything more than that is just busywork, and takes away from other things you could be getting accomplished.

What subjects do you thik that they could get rid of and why?

Homework - Easy. Waste of time. It seems that if I DO my homework, my algebra teacher doesn't check it, but if I don't do one problem, say, then she checks it and freaks out at me (hehe, I know, that's life)

Computer class - Boring, if you're me. I know everything we're learning. My stupid teacher doesn't know anything about computers (an error message popped up the other day and she freaked out because it said "press OK to resume the program" and didn't know what to do...). I say, computer should be "learn programming and not KidPix".

That's pretty much my two cents about school (and which classes / subjects suck).

YES, I'm in school. I do well in all my classes except when I don't do my waste of time homework. Even my teachers say that homework is worthless...

Hm... I barely learn and get good grades. But it's only because I listened in class and made my homework... Since I'm in college, I am doing it the same and I'm still successful. I guess I learn much in class and that homework is just enough to not forget all of this. One day of learning before the exam is usually enough for me. I think homework does very much have a point.

I guess I am really unlucky, I go to a private school and sense we don't have alot of money to do things we just got a computer lab. The part that sucks is that my class is the first class that it is required to take the computer class unless he does not want to graduate.

Hmm... Blizzard you have a point. One day of learning before an exam is all I need, as well. It's just homework is pointless if you know all of the topics. What is the point of wasting 3+ hours afterschool (so like I get home at five and work until 8:30 and then go to bed at 9? Where is my time to do extra crap like work on my RPG and my programming projects? I am trying to cycle school, my rpg, my projects (usually in Ruby, Python or C++), and also being an active member of the 2 forums that I am a member of. It's just not *fair*. Weekends suck too because usually I have an essay or report to do over them. I get from like 8AM to 10AM to work on my crap and then 7PM-10PM on weekends to do stuff. Not enough for the stuff I need to do.

My opinion is that homework should EXIST, but should be minimal enough so that extra curricular activities besides my sports (uhg) right after school should be able to be accomplished. Besides those activities, I have guitar lessons, practicing, and then jazz band (only on Mondays and Fridays). My grades stay fairly high (B+ - A+) and my exam and test grades are also high, but I still have no time to relax if I want to make money (for those of you that think I can stop some of my programming, I can't, because I have a piece of software to manage and debug if I want to make any money at all).

Welll, i'm just going to refer to cobragamer, that yes, there are many duffers who just come to the field to play, well i get exited in the p.e period too, though those fools wont let some of us play anything, they think themselves to be better than us. Yeah right. It's not like im bad at sports, but im better at studying, no, not a nerd either, i manage to get 90%, i manage to just spent maybe 1-2 hrs a day studying, not like the whole day, thats why i cum round here a lot, and i manage to do nice in football too.
Its just the fact that the students are not willing to study, like, i like p.e but dont demad it in every period, but they do, which is their problem, if they dun wanna. Any student can do nice if he just puts his/her mind into it(no not fairy tale morals, fairy tale morals suck), but no one is willing to try.
And those who do good in studies don't get a chance in sports, because they think theyre nerds.
I mean, we do get a chance, but not the main guy, well i like being a defender, but there are others, who are much much better than me, but all the get is another defender position. But the shooter should be there, because he sucks so badly. When he cant do a goal, its nothing, when we cant, he starts shouting like hell, i feel like slapping him.

Wait, we're going out of topic @_@
Just we gotta concentrate that the student should be good, not the periods

The thing elegy said bout arts, i agree =D
For the first time @_@
