Post by: pokeytrev on May 14, 2009, 09:44:47 PM
Hello, I'm new to there parts, but not to Rm2k.
Without going into further detail I present to you my ongoing project: "Visage of Evil"

Synopsis: Clint, a man of darkness, has been summoned by the witch Carmilla to further the evil deeds of mankind, and to usher in a new era of darkness. Being brought upon humanity in the early 1700's, Clint is created by means of witchcraft and dark arts. Later he is burned for witchcraft and his ashes are buried in the graveyard near the other dark graves. Seven days later, Clint ascends from the soil. Clint is said to be a child born from the ground. Plaguing humanity no more, he sits in isolation for hundreds of years only to be made ignorant of his purpose and thrust back into humanity. His powers lay dormant, and he is unaware that he possesses them; however, after a single even his darkness is awoken, and he wreaks havoc upon humanity once more. It is now up to his closest childhood friends: Trev, Edgar, nick and kevin--plus a whole host of potential recruits-- to stop him in the modern day.

Time Period: Two time periods involved. The first being the 1700's, the second: modern day.

Location(s): A puritain village, a modern American suburb, a grocery store, a school, a few dungeons, neighborhoods, etc. etc.

Characters (ever expanding...):
Trev: Coming soon
Edgar: Coming soon
Nick: Coming Soon
Kevin: Coming Soon
Rena: Coming soon
Nathaniel and Vox(1700's): coming soon

*cough* mapping *cough*
Mapping is all square-y and has little detail. The house is mapped incorrectly, too.

Yeah, I am working on the on making it less dull. Any suggestions as to how to make it look less blocky?

Add trees. Plants. Don't make squares.

This is probably a little better.

The key to making decent maps is that sense of randomness. You'll never see 5 trees aligned in a perfect row, or an old, deserted city street completely straight with no blemishes, etc. I do like the FSM tilesets though, keep using those. Make sure you use their pictures as guides; it'll make everything look a lot more "real." Oh, and make sure you make buildings in more than one way. Kind of like this:

See? Enough forestry and plants that you might find in an actual city, no squares (Except for the houses, which should be squares), and each building has a definite walls. The tilesets are hard to get used to at first, but you'll eventually see where everything's supposed to go.

As far as your game itself goes, not too shabby. The story's pretty fresh, the name doesn't include "Dragon," "Legend," "Fantasy," "Tale," or anything trite like that, and there's definitely room to actually develop a story (More than "Hey, it's our old buddy Clint! Even though it makes no sense, let's beat the carrots out of him and save the world!" End game)

Wow, just wow.
Thank you very much Sirius. I didn't expect such a helpful and well rounded reply! I will definitely keep using the FSM chipsets, as they are really useful and detailed.

As for the game itself, this will be an ongoing project: it will be finished. I know a lot of creators start and never finish--it would probably be safe to assume 70%?--but I assure you I have the drive to see this project through completion.
