I got yellow first.
So.
Now that I'm somewhat making games, I have a question.

How is missingno possible?
He'd half to pre-exist in the database right?
I don't see how talking to the trainer dude, flying to cinnebar island and moving up and down on the right side of the island makes a jacked up pokemon.

Everyone in town had red. I was lucky enough to get blue. I was the one they selected to be the unpopular kid at the time, so I missed out on trading and stuff. :\

yellow was the best, not only cuz I like pikachu but because it had that "friend" element that the other games lack.  Pikachu follows you around and reacts differently to the situation...I miss that.  True the variety of starters in the others was nice but only having Pikachu made it a bit more fun to play, since you needed to build up a good team before really doing anything, making it a bit more engaging and personal.  The others...you could just go ahead with bulbasaur or squirtle right through the first 2-3 gyms with hardly any other pokemon. Also in yellow you could get a few more pokemon than in the others, and for me that was better because by the time I actually got the games no one was really into them anymore and had sold theirs or lost them, so no one to trade with.  Also the color-change for the different towns, that was a nice touch at the time.

Also Pikachu rocks.  if I could choose any Pokemon to bring to life I'd choose pika.  Mew is in second place, Articuno in third.

I don't see how talking to the trainer dude, flying to cinnebar island and moving up and down on the right side of the island makes a jacked up pokemon.

Spoiler for Taken from Bulpapedia:
Missingno. is the Glitch Pokémon that appears after viewing the Old Man's tutorial in Viridian City on how to catch Pokémon, then immediately Flying to Cinnabar Island and Surfing along the right hand side of the island until one is encountered, without visiting any other areas.

Whenever the game "sets up" the planned battle against the Old Man's Weedle, it needs to change the player's character name to "OLD MAN" so that it will display "OLD MAN" instead of the name the player has entered.

The programmers decided to use the area of data where wild Pokémon information is as a temporary storage area for the player's name, due to the lack of memory on a Game Boy. Normally this wouldn't cause any abnormal activity, as the correct data for the wild Pokémon available is written to this area in memory whenever the player travels to an area where it is possible to catch wild Pokémon.

Along Cinnabar Island's coast, however, there is no data indicating which wild Pokémon are catchable, and the same is true for both Viridian City and Cinnabar Island itself, at least by movement in long grass. The game uses whatever data was already in the corresponding area of data when determining which wild Pokémon encountered and their levels-- now the player's name. Normally this space in memory would hold the data of the last area visited where wild Pokémon were catchable in grass and their level data (this same glitch allows players to exit the Safari Zone and Fly immediately to Cinnabar Island to be able to catch and fight Safari Zone Pokémon in the same way as they would in other areas), however, since in both Viridian City and Cinnabar Island the data is empty for Pokémon obtainable in the grass, the active data is never overwritten, leading to Missingno.'s. availability, among other things.

The name of the player has six hexadecimal values in it. The game needs only three "slots" of wild Pokémon data to store this.

The wild Pokémon the player encounters along the coast are determined by the third, fifth, and seventh characters of the player's name, while the levels are determined by the second, fourth, and sixth characters, respectively. By knowing which letters and symbols match which breeds and numbers, through use of certain calculators and charts [2], it is possible to set your player name at the start of the game depending on which Pokémon you wish to find, and at which levels.

Thank you Zephyr, I always wondered how it worked, and I understand now.
So wouldn't that mean that missingno. was purposely put in the database?
(Seeing how his name is conveniently stands for missingnumber.)
If the players name determines which pokemon and what level they are at.

Also, I tried loading him to pokemon stadium once.
Didn't work, but he popped out as that Blue Thing that will
take damage for your pokemon when you use a certain skill. (I forgot)

how so?  my first time playing through any pokemon game I only whited out once...it was against a poison trainer that I wasn't ready for (I was training low-level pokemon on cycle road and he spotted me as I tried to edge around him; Pikachu was already low on health)  I should've taken him out beforehand but I had forgotten about him at the moment.

If the players name determines which pokemon and what level they are at.

I figure the wild pokemon are chosen by their number. aka, 003 would produce Venusaur, 006 would produce Charizard, etc. So if a number was generated by the name of your character that didn't fit in the 1-151 range, it would reset itself to 000 and produce a message MISSINGNO. It doesn't necessarily mean it was planned, it just means that the game couldn't find a pokemon to fit the number you generated, and it tells you that. I'm not 100% sure about this but it makes sense (to me at least.)

I haven't really seen missingno in the game, but if that's his in-game name it was probably put in there in case of a glitch.  So technically he might be in the database in case of an error or something...but if his name is ? then it's a sprite glitch.

I remember this one glitch called "Glitch City"... I don't remember the whole thing but the gist of it is:  you go into the safari zone, do not take a step instead save, go back in, say no, go back out, fly to cinnabar, and the entire island turns into a green glitch city.  Pikachu doesn't follow you--it's more like a house of mirrors: pikachu will pop up in different places and walk in random directions and disappear udner tiles.  You can still surf and everything...  I think that's the glitch, I found it online and tried it.  Didn't do anything to my game but I didn't save there.

so true.  Yellow was better for people (like me) that didn't have many others to trade with, whereas Red and Blue required quite a bit of trading to get a full pokedex.  Though before I had to give yellow back to my friend I never got to test the mew glitch...I've always wanted Mew so badly in those games.

I like crystal but I hate how there's no point to Kanto other than the badges and a few new pokemon...the Museum's closed, the Safari Zone is closed...it was such a letdown, especially the safari zone.  I found that place pretty cool in yellow when I first played.  And there's no point in the other places like the Kanto radio tower or the power plant...or seafoam islands, or unkown cave...BTW is there really an item called wardensglasses in G/S/C to open the safari zone?  I heard the old man in...where is it...goldenrod or something...the town with the casino and radio tower, the old man wandering around near bill's house is the safari warden on vacation.  Is that true?

No, I read up on the bulba wiki.
There are like, 22 missingno.
It was done on purpose, just getting it wasn't done on purpose.
Also, there is some generator on the bulbawiki site, that allows you
to catch whatever pokemon you want by your players name on Red/Blue when you do the missingno cheat.
I think you can capture Rockets and Gary and the other trainers.
Either that, or they just enter a pokemon battle with you.

No, no way to get on the safari zone. When I looked up glitch city, they said it couldn't be done in Crystal, Gold, Silver because no access to it.

To answer Missingno, it does not exist. I have tried on all three original Pokemon games "Red, Yellow and Blue" to no avail. Unless I'm doing something wrong, it does not work, I have tried at least four or more ways to get Missingno, none worked, including the one posted in this thread.
