This is the Great Debate of FF IX. It's sort of implied, but is never quite said.

A little late for that warning now, heh, but the "narrator" in the ending sequence always seemed to me to be Vivi, an considering al the black mages had a limited span of life, it seemed that he should not have been alive during the end of the game. Every main character (and most secondary characters, Fratley, Cid, etc.) even were featured in the ending sequence, but not "Vivi". One of those "Vivi's" at the end could have been him, but they never said, hence, the Great Debate!
