I like stuff that's very dramatic, but not cheesey. Usually good if it involves the good/bad sides of religion, and ESPECIALLY tasty if the main character winds up dead.

Depending on how I'm feeling, I'll either want to play something that is so incredibly deep and compelling that you have to spend hours sorting out all of the incredible complications, or something so simple and straightforward that it's sweet (I had to stop myself from saying "short and sweet," because straightforwardness does not necessarily mean less gameplay *points to Dragon Warrior 3*).

I like stories with a good plott, not too serious all the way through, some comedy sequeezed inbetween but not to the point where it's labeled as a 'comedy'. I like drama and heart-breaking endings. Or, those endings that make you think on it for a month or longer. I also like endings where it hints a lot towards a sequel or something of the sort. Dramatic and comedic for me.

I like a story with complexity about "what is human, and life itself?"
And International conflict...

And a lot of action... Of course.

Oh, and with a setting of mixed fantasy and real world.

Yeah, that sounds good. Romance is a key element in games for me. Take Final Fantasy X, for instance, Yuna and Tidus had a good romance. Sora and Kairi from Kingdom Hearts- many others as well.

I believe that romance is a negative factor in gameplay.  It's way, way overused, and shouldn't be used as a central plot device.  Especially when the entire basis of the villain's actions are to win the love of someone.  Bleh.

Thanks to this post, I hate you more than ever. Not because you don't like ff8, but because you don't like it because of its time period. You don't deserve videogames.

I like epic heroism to slowly blossom forth from the main character, with a hint of romance. The more tragic, the better.

As far as time period goes, I really don't think it matters at all, as long as the story's good. Who cares what time period it's in?

I like when game has romance with slight erotic in it. It helps to make our protagonists more deep, not just some heroes that want to save the world, but persons with complex psychology and intense emotions. And sad-endings... well it doesn't need to be sad end, but I like when game story is shocking and unpredictable, and that is mostly done in negative rather than positive way. Dark and serious, but in the other hand needs to have it's comic moments. Easter-eggs are fine with me too.

Every decent video game needs one awesomely amazing character who helps out the heroes - but only when they're in an incredibly tight pinch!  Throughout the course of the game, the player needs to anticipate the point when said character will actually join the party.  Unfortunately, the character never actually joins, but that leaves lots of room for bad fanfiction.  And what would a great side-character be without bad fanfiction?  Nothin'.

I like when game has romance with slight erotic in it.
omg, I do everything within my power to avoid games with erotic themes, even if it's not a major proponent of the plot.  That definitely gets a big "doubleyoo-tee-eff!!" in my mind.

Agh, you and your.... ambiguous choices...

Sthrattoff has used combined categories of plot and setting, as if they were differing genres of story.  It is possible for a game to be both science-fiction in nature and heroic.

Actually, I've never played a video game of any genre that didn't include any manner of heroism.

Yes, but psyche and self-analysis are different from eroticism, which is what Corvus Sangreal seemed to be saying.

**
Rep: +0/-0Level 88
Hehe, I have not said that it all must be connected with erotics. Perhaps I put it wrong, when saying that about erotics in first sentence. It  is only one of possible aspects for deepening psyche. I actually specially mentioned that because of poll's option - romance. And romance without little erotics in it is too dreamy and unrealistic for me, but opinions on that can vary of course. Self-analysis is great to familiarize chars with player, that way story will be more intriguing, and player will become attached, wanting to know more about what happens to this party, because if you are good in story writing, player will probably emotionally attach to them. Like in dnd, it is always more interesting and fun to play with players that made good job on their char's psyche, and if they really play like it.

Term eroticism for me is in the first place art. To make someone sexually aroused (with your clothes on, other than that it is mostly pornography) you can use special motions, words (mostly ambiguous) and such to invoke in someone desire, emotions, passion... It gives real power to romance. Because romance for itself is too dreamy, and some people will find aversion for it. Personally I like it, and most of my poetry is romantic. But never forget the power of sexuality for humans. Sex is the mankind's best way of pleasure. I understand that most of this forum consists of people younger than 16/17, so you probably won't be much impressed and/or introduced with artistic side of sexuality.

I guess some of you have played a game that had it all, romance, an average part of funny situations, pretty good story and all of that mixed in a way not to spoil the original pretty much "serious" gameplay? The name of the beast... Tales Of Phantasia, 4 Nintendo?

The guys and girls who wrote dialogs went even into something i had not yet encountered; at one point during a travel with a ship, the guy in your party asks you something like "ummm, she has a such good *CENSORED*, she probably also has a very sweet pu*CENSORED*..." well, until that scene i was assured that the game is without any funny elements...

MY OPINION (who cares!!) THAT A GOOD GAME HAS:
60% Serious Gameplay
20% Shocking Elements
10% Funny
(I doubt that a hero whose life is on stake smiles when fighting a dragon)
10% Romance
(And i doubt he gets "horny" when killing Goblins, or maybe he does?)

The game, The RPG game, is not all about killing goblins. That would be hack and slash game.
I mean, what freak of nature your char must be that his only joy is killing goblins??

Goblin was just and example,
well in D&D we have Dragon Slayers, whose only joy is to kill dragons.
Sex, Drugs and some Dragoon'ass whoopin!

I believe too much romance can truly spoil a game,
but we have some games which revolve all the time around
romance but still manage to provide excellent and unsurpassed gameplay.

The translators of the DeJap release of Tales of Phantasia have admitted that they exaggerated much of the dialogue, and most of the "suggestive" conversations never actually occured in the actual game.

I also liked the plot in FFX, I actually was addicted to that game (My first FF played), FFVIII was confusing, the reading got my eyes tired, Bomberman world was heaps of fun, full of bright colors and heaps of suspense, but the story line is really original but it alright. Devil May Cry 1 was good, but short and last but no least, all the anime and manga series I have watched/read till episode/volume 2 were good.

I like story lines that are completely different from what you expect... like this one game my older sister made... it was awesome, she made it out that the main character and his friends were going to reunite their nation with three other nations. In the end, a great war broke out. The main character went to each of the nations and stole something precious from each of the rulers. And he had this whole speach for when the rulers came to get their precious items, but totally blew the speech. In the end, he was hanged for treason against the three nations, and though the three items (which were actually two 21 year old girls and a 13 year old boy) were returned to their homes, no peace came to the nations. In the fourth nation's (the mages/elves) desperate attempt for peace, they created a race called 'humans' which were kind creatures. They hoped these humans to bring peace, but instead the other nations resented and tried to destroy them.

That's the end of the game 'Precious Peace', but a prequel to her game she's working on now, 'Birth of Legend'

Anyway, it's a plot you don't see too often... main character getting killed and screwing everything up worse... it was kinda a twist, sorta, and I liked it.

But the fact that you, your best friend, and ur Girlfriend all get seperated (on different worlds) and desperately search for each other makes for a great game. Then to top it off, you have to lose one friend in order to save the world, yet you still can't go back to your home world to be with ur girlfriend. A lose lose situation. Well I hate the old before cars type stuff. im not a fan of space storys either. i like mine to be somewhere between 1800-2200. As for romance, most games just do it wrong. its not realistic. In real life I'm and underground pick-up artist, so i know exactly what to do to get a girl and lose a girl under most situations. in most games the main character does the exact OPPISITE of what would attract a woman -their insecure, they compliment her, they puther on a pedistal, buy her gifts, call her beautiful, treat her like a princess" which is the oppisite of what attracts a good looking girl. so basically if games have this horrible romance that is very unbelievable, i dont play them. now if they have realist romances, kinda like ashe sorta liking balthier in ff12, thats realistic. i like that. I hate having a "must find and kill the main bad guy" type of game. it makes the game seem like you just wondering around buying time until the final battle with the villian. i like ff8 alot so storys like that where you dont know how the gamaes going to end. all the .hack have great storylins too. anything where you dont know whats going to happen. oh and they gotta be philsophical and question what is human or the meaning of life. and its good if your not sure if your the bad guy or the villian is. you could both be fighting to improve the world, but yoru views clash. hell im going to be a writer someday -part time pick up artist- and i ask myself when playing a game "If this were a book would i actually read it?"

ppl with B&W pics are not emo, ppl with anime are.
Yes, storyline and music make the game! Thats why I didn't like 12. it was by far the longest FF so far, but when i finished it with like 130 hours it felt like a shot game, because there were only a few scenes and bits of storyline in the game, it was mostly dungeons, getting from area to area, and monster killing, but nobody remembers that sort of stuff.
