Character moves to the left on game start.

I just reformatted my PC and have started using RPG Maker XP again. However, I am encountering an annoying problem -_-

Whenever I start a game my character automatically moves left. When I hold down the right arrow key, he moves up. The RMXP copy is 100% legit, there are no added scripts, there is not a single event. This happens on every map, regardless of the tileset or whatever I try to do to fix the problem.

I've tried running in compatibility mode, that doesn't solve it. Nothing seems to be fixing the problem.

I'm running Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2).. maybe the service pack is causing the problem because on my last installation I was running XP Home with no updates whatsoever.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?

the only thing i can think of is that there is something really stupid going on with your keyboard

to check it, dl rm2k3, run it and see if it still happens
if not, try reinstalling rm
if it happens there too, try throwing your keyboard out of the window.

Check your movement keys and see if they correspond with your keyboard.

I had this problem.  Make sure you don't have a joystick or a controller plugged in.
