Putting in your own sprites in RPG Maker 2k3

Hey, I'm new to these forums and RPG Maker in general, and I was wondering if  you could make your own scratch custom character/monster animations and pics and all that, and if so, how to do it, as I can't see exactly...am I grossly insanly overlooking something or what? Sorrt for sounding so noobish, but then again, I am one...
