Wondering how to combine aspects of two scripts

    I'm using CCOA's UMS (and Blizz-ABS, I guess I should mention to be thorough), and I'm looking to add ForeverZer0's Diary script... and I'm wondering... ok, so with the UMS, I was able to add a bg image to the text box using a script event, and basically I'm wanting to add that function to the diary script. And I'm trying to learn if you can combine functions of scripts like this, if it works something like (not knowing anything about scripting really) if you have the UMS script above the diary script, and assuming I learned what the hell to type in the diary script, I could use the functions of one script with another? Can anyone help me learn some of this towards this goal?
