Blurb:Hard Reset is a new cyber-punk first-person shooter by Flying Wild Hog, a "super-group" of ex-CD Projekt (
The Witcher series) and ex-Pigs Can Fly (
Painkiller,
Bulletstorm) employees, hellbent on delivering the best "old-school" computer FPS experience of this generation. Lots of things explode in this beautiful and stylized world inspired by classic, pulp science fiction...But most importantly, it's inspired by the likes of
Duke Nukem 3D and
Quake. The game wields a two-weapon system with five firing modes for each, and an alternate firing mode for each firing mode, effectively making 20 different weapons. Weapons and gear are upgraded at stations found periodically throughout levels, and are purchased with credits found throughout the map and dropped by enemies. And enemies there are; Enemies range from colossal to pint-sized, but are relentless in their quest to kill you? The combat is fast, unyielding, and strategic. Make good use of your weapon modes or you might just die. You'll
want to not die (yeah, yeah, come at me).
My thoughts:The developers boast about its levels being filled with secrets, though the demo is hardly indicative as it is roughly half of the first level, the secrets in the demo were really just easily visible cracks-in-walls which could be demolished to open up a room with ammo, health, credits. The demo is, however, absolutely stupendous. The fact that there's a demo released before the game is a wonderful, and that fact that there is one at all is a marvel. But as a testament to Fly Wild Hog's intentions, the game runs wonderfully! My
9800GT plays the game on highish with very few hiccups, such that I don't feel the need to lower it, and it looks
incredible in motion. Explosions are plentiful, as they should be. The game feels
very tight, and the weapon system is good. My only complaint so far is how long it might take to unlock all of the upgrades. I got about four in the demo, out of maybe 20? The world is self is a real looker, with awesome art, and watching the massive shadows cast from blimp-like advertising constructs move about the ground is really something to behold. Overall, I really enjoyed the demo and will buy it. As good as it gets? Maybe not, but if you like first-person shooters it's definitely worth keeping an eye on.
