Inventory Item Limit Script

I would like a script that tests how many items are in the player's inventory and returns that value to a variable i can specify. I have events all set up to limit one's inventory--all i need now is a script. Inventory limiting scrips like Modern Algebra's Grid Inventory aren;t compatible. Thanx.
