[RM2k3] Message speed and sounds.

I have RPG Maker 2003 v1.08.  I'm wanting a simple sound to play each time a letter is written as the message is being written and a sound to play once the message is finished being written.  Is this even possible in RPG Maker 2003?  I seem to remember an animated face picture tutorial for RPG Maker 2000 that I never checked out and was thinking perhaps the same concept could be applied to what I want to do above.  Also, is there any way to permanently set the speed of a message without having to put /s[3] or whatever at the beginning of every single message?  Any help would be appreciated.
