I've noticed that a lot of my guy friends go straight to eventing and map making before making a concrete story. I on the other hand like to focus more on the story and worry about other details later.

This is pretty spot on, imo. I've noticed that the first thing I tend to work on are the items and such, then the mapping and eventing. All the while, story ideas kind of simmer in the back of my mind.
