Apple is giving out free bumper cases to fix the problem, for people that are having it. At least they're doing something about it.

They can't manufacture enough bumpers to meet the 3+ million iPhone 4s sold and every future iPhone 4 to be sold, so they're going to give you a few third party choices. Whether people need it or not, they're going to have one sent to them. I think it's what most people did when Nintendo started offering free Wii remote condoms; everyone ordered 4.
