Some time last night, Ryan Tate of Gawker argued with Steve Jobs about his motives and other things.
All this was triggered by the ending line of the new 'What is iPad advert'

Oh Steve, you so totalitarian.

Frankly, I don't care about Flash on a mobile, I just like to play devil's advocate every now and again when it comes up in IRC.  And as a programmer, I can understand how the idea of a required API would make working on a device easier.  Less interpretation layers to go through means less strain on the CPU which creates better battery life and performance.

I don't care if Apple has a stick up their ass about Flash, I don't care if Adobe wants to try and debase them, I don't care if gawkers think they know programming better, or even do know programming better (if they do, why are they gawkers?).

And let's be honest.
If you had a device that you put your name on, and opened it up for any developer, released a development kit, and offered to pay them a majority of the profit from their apps, would you seriously not review any of them?  Would you not have design standards?  Would you not reject those with overly-mature content?

If you link me to a device with an open-to-use API for people to develop on that doesn't have a reviewing system and specific design standards or quality standards, I'll tell you it's a device that is doomed to become like the rest of the internet.  Do you want 4chan all over the app store?

As a consumer, I commend Steve and Apple for the quality they've maintained on their devices and in their App Store. They have every right to set the bar of what is and what is not acceptable. Despite the iPad being "closed", they sold one million units in under a month, so they're obviously doing something right. On top of that, it gets excellent reviews. If more people had a problem with the way Apple does things, they'd vote with their feet (or wallets) and Apple would be forced to go with whatever the consumers and/or developers wanted in order to sell their products.

Also, I want to talk with Steve. ;9
