Welcome to Magi's try at ripping the tilesets from Final Fantasy 6. I have come a long way, hard to believe, but its true. I can rip tilesets now, my only problem so far is autotiles and what should be autotiles.
But, I thought I should show everyone what I have done so far first:

Spoiler for Screenshots::

Yay, there wasn't a door. There will be one once I figure out the mechanics of autotiles and placement of them...Oh, and those images are new ;)

Narshe Cliff Scene (start of the game): Complete
Narshe Northern Cliff (Where you fight for the Esper against Kefka): Nearly done -- autotiles info needed.
Narshe Caves (Area where you get Umaro): Haven't started yet, but I do know I can do it fast, it'll be the autotiles that's the problem.

It will not come out blurry unless you're using interpolation. Open it in paint and resize it by 300% or 400% or whatever makes the tiles 32x32.

No. Open the entire tileset in whatever image editing software you have and make it like 200% larger or something until every tile is 32x32.

It's obviously using interpolation because it's blurry. Interpolation makes it blurry so it doesn't appear pixelated after resizing. There must be a way to disable interpolation.

Bump for for the goodies! :)

Okay, this is what I got so far :) It works too! But I need to know if there are any see-able errors in the graphics, anyone wanna test it for me? Also, now I just need to figure out how to make the "AUTOTILES" out of the FF6 tiles.

Spoiler for:

If anyone would like to test what I have, here is the file.

Ignore the red and green, as I just for right now, needed to remove the colors around the tree. The plants and grass should work. If you see any errors, could you tell me about? Also, I just need to find out how to make the "Autotiles" now. Also, I see a few errors in the tree, but I can easily fix that ^.^

:D

So, is it good? :P

BUMP!

Okay, I know this is a old thread, but it turns out my computer was blocking most of the Editor's options, but now that I've set that up, I created a tileset quickly. Its not in order...as I'm trying to figure the order out. This was done using a hack and a editor, ripping the tilesets I mean. And putting them in working order will take me years! :c

Hopefully not though, for if I can figure out how to set up the passage for the tilesets, it won't take me forever >.>

This is what I have of Narshe (I mean by tileset, not by the actual look of Narshe lol). I have more, but I wanted to test it out. It seems I can't set the passage for going under a bridge or anything like that. It just won't let me. :o

(Video in a moment)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMECgdNerdw

Anyway, could someone test them for me and maybe help me figure out how to properly set the tilesets? Or am I doing it wrong?

Feedback please! Also, I would appreciate it if someone could test it for me and report back to help me if you find any errors. :)

*Also, for those who care, the newest update of GIMP can increase sprite size without ruining the image. Select none in the dropdown box when you select the "Resize" tab. It'll work :)

EDIT2:
No need to help set the passages, I think I figured it out :)

I do need help with "Auto" tiles. Does anyone know how to create auto tiles? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading!

Update again!

I've nearly done with Narshe! I have a few ropes to do, the mountains and then the autotiles, and then I'm done with Narshe's town. Next will be the inside of the houses, and then the caves -- which will be easy -- and then the battle hill of Narshe. Then I'm completely done with Narshe.

Here is a screenshot of my resent test of the tilesets. I hurried up and uploaded, but behind the tips the tops of the rocks, are flooring. But that's now gone in the actual tileset. I just didn't have time to screenshot again lol

So, is it coming along nicely, or bad?

Expect more news soon! Any feedback would help me :)

Update!

I think I found out to make autotiles, so maybe this will shorten my my time of learning how to do things, down a lot. :)
Can someone test it out for me? I'm not sure if its good, but...

Here is an update!
*Again, please ignore the tiles behind the tips of the cliffs. And if it looks like the rocks on the ground still have tile behind them, its because I put tile on all layers and forgot to erase the extra ones >.>

Spoiler for:

Any feedback will help me greatly! Thanks for reading!

*Also, I think this thread should now be in a different place. I'm not sure, but it seems like it doesn't belong in requests anymore lol

For what? The sig, or which RPG game maker is this for? I'll just answer both.
Sig = GIMP
RPGgm = XP (since I don't like VX and I'm not even sure if adding tilesets can be done lol)

Okay! I'm down with the mountains! I'm working on the caves (I'm not sure if the recolored caves are really needed...but I'll do them anyway, I guess.) right now, which is pretty easy. The biggest problem for all ripping for me though, is the inside of the houses.

I can't seem to do the sides of the inside, the walls, I mean. They come out messed up. I'm thinking its supposed to be autotile, but I'm not sure lol

Anyway, this Sunday (if I manage to get the PC) I will try and post a video of my progress. :)

Thanks for reading!

Alright, started up on it....I've encountered a problem, similar if not exactly, like the one problem I encountered inside the houses.

My problem is the sides of the map, where ever it may be at the moment. I tried everything I could think of, and each time it is either lower or higher than the rest of the tileset and cannot match up with it. I'm thinking a autotile will do, but I'm not sure what to do. This problem is a little too hugh for me to handle right now >.>

Spoiler for:

Something keeps tellin' me Autotile, but then I go "there would be too many tiles to fit into the autotile template :<

the problem is that you are missing the interior angle of the autotile... There's the display image, that shows when you are in the editor. Next to that, you will see an area that, in the RTP has corners... Those corners are for those interior angles where you are having problems.

That one 32 x 32 square is where you would put the interior angles (it takes only about a quarter of the pic for the autotile, so it doesn't matter if there is all four in there. That what it's designed for after all!)

Of course, I am speaking for VX, as I haven't opened XP in ages... and never made sprites for it...

Ok, so, after a few tries, I found the tiles that were supposed to be the interior angles.

Now, here it is, and I also included a template for making autotiles for XP.

The first one is incorrectly named, and is a correct autotile.

Template.png is a template for a proper autotile

Template2.png is a legend to understand the template

OH! Thanks, Sash! This is what it looks like. I think it looks great, now she just needs walls lol
Spoiler for:

I improvised for those two, for the walls that had to connect with them. :)

Now I just need to apply the same thing to the inside of the houses, and then all the ripping will (well, should be, since I didn't have problems before) be extremely easy!

I have a few questions though, if that's okay :)

Its about the interior corners...
[] This means top right of the image I'm turning into a autotile, right? Of the top right corner of the middle part of the autotile you made for me?

For the display image what....exactly does that mean? :-[

For the no use area, I normal fill it in with the element/ground of the tileset it goes with. Like with my snow one, I filled it in with snow. Is that the correct way to use it if I had something to go with it, or should I just keep it blank from now on?

Pattern Outline is the sides and corners of the object I autotilin', right...?

Pattern is the middle (inside I guess) of what I'm autotilin'?

Sorry if I'm becoming a pesk, I really do appreciate all the help :)

well, basically...

in an "L" shape, in this formation

_|(interior)|_

the angle I am talking about is the spot where the vertical and horizontal line meet. This graphic was a bit difficult to find, because it was seperated from the other ceiling tiles, but it shouldn't be too hard to find, you just have to realize that it is how "|" connects to "_", meaning that it will be little more than a small piece, like "."

IDk... I'm confusing myself...

the interior angle is where, in a "+" formation, the graphic that will be at the center of the "+".

Ok, now that I confused you (and myself), on to the next topic!

the display image is what you will see when you select the graphic in the editor. It doesn't have any effect on how the game looks, it is just a way to tell you what the graphic does.

No use is a tile which, as far as I can tell, has no purpose whatsoever. It seems to be there to fill up space, and doesn't seem to have a purpose. Although i might be wrong, there isn't any reason to fill it in.

the pattern outline and pattern are exactly what you think they are.

EDIT: You will need a separate tileset for the corners, because RM can't do them with autotiles... That is, it doesn't support slanted walls. It only has 90 degree angles, and you will have to add the extra sides on a separate layer.

You have to just make due with what you have... personally, i think I would take the large image, copy it, shrink it down to 33.3% of the size, and then throw it in there, but it probably would look bad... Point is, it's just supposed to be a representation, so you know what you're using.

RM stands for Rpg Maker. XP, VX, 2k3, and 2k are all the types of RM.

And I mean that, if you want your walls to have a nice sloping effect rather than the extremely square setup of an autotile, you need to edit it yourself, as RM doesn't allow you to have sloped angles for walls. It is 90 degrees or nothing...

That is, there is "|_" but no "\" unless you put it in manually.

How would one go about editing it to have slopes other than 90 degrees? :)

well, you would just have to have it in a regular tileset and place them manually...

Ah, okay, thanks again, Sash!....I think I understand it all now. Tomorrow, when I get the Home PC, I'm gonna see if I can apply this all to my work.

*When I finish a piece tomorrow...may I post it if it has errors? :)*

Go for it!

You see, I want to teach everyone how to fish! That is, rather than giving you a fish, and being fed for a day, I wish for people to learn how to fish, and be fed for a lifetime!

Self-sufficiency is something I admire, to be honest... bahahahah!

Sorry about that, had to stay off the PC for two whole days due to a storm and then I got sick :/

I'm working on it now, I just have to find something I need to turn into a autotile first lol

Well, any walls or floors, really, should be autotiles... The only tings that shouldn't be autotiles is items, windows, statues, and misc. furniture...

Oh >.< I didn't know for sure and was getting confused. So walls, paths, floors = autotile. Got it. I was spending all night trying to rip different graphics, when I could have used what I had ripped lol

Thanks again, I'm so silly :<

other tiles that fall into that category are water, as well as special tiles like forests and sand and the such for the overworld map.

Ah! I didn't know that's how the worldmap worked! I'll try it with water, or maybe sand. That might be easier. lol

The different areas that are of the same tiletypes are animation tiles (that's why there is more than 1 "shallow water" "deep water" and "poison" tiles... So that animation can be added to make it seem more like a liquid than a solid) and, assuming that ff6 had water animations (I don't recall any, other than when you jump in the river at the veldt), you will have to fit them into that template. (same goes with the waterfalls and all that, although, I don't recall where to put that...)

Oh, I thought animation tiles go into the wider template? Oh well, you know more than me lol

I have ripped a perfect graphic and have resized. As soon as I get over my flu, I'll post what I did :)

Oh, I thought animation tiles go into the wider template?

if you mean my template i gave you, no... I didn't make a template for the animation tiles... In order to make it, I believe you have to make three autotiles using the template I gave you, and combine them, side by side, to form the animated autotile...

Combine them?

Isn't there a width/height restriction to the autotiles? :O

no...? im pretty sure you can put up to four templates next to each other to get the animation effect in there. im pretty sure of it, if not someone will correct me.

This text is way too personal.

That's for RPG Maker XP, which I notice you use, so yeah. VX it's different.

So XP can do it, but VX can't, right?

VX has animated tilesets too.

They are just set up differently from XP tilesets...

They contain 3 animation states, as you can see in tileset A1... And you place them sid e by side.

I assumed that they would all be the same size... But they aren't... wierd... Anyways, this is the template that you need to fit an animated autotile to... I think it's right, or it might be 2x as big as it needs to be... Each set (that is, each group of green, yellow, brown and blue) is a different animation state, or frame, for the animation.

for an animated auto-tile, is what I meant...

Although it is a pretty simple change, it still would be easier to provide a template than a paragraph of explanation... especially because I already did that once, methinks...

basically, use this template, with the center squares as the "initial" animation. The initial animation would show after each frame, so it would be:

frame 2 (initial frame)
Frame 1
Frame 2 (Initial Frame)
Frame 3
Frame 2 (Initial Frame)

At least... I think that's how it works...

Okay, thought I should update. I'm trying to find all the inverse corners (Interior corners) to the hay, and this is what I have so far lol

Still messed up, but I'm getting there!

Also, I'm not sure if this is for VX as well, but I did some mega searching (which took me days! lol) and this is some information that I found.

You know the top middle box? Well, that is the autotile underneath what you are making. If you want dirt on grass, then the top middle would be the grass. If you wanted stone on snow, the top middle would be snow, so the stone knows what to lay on. If you leave it transparent, I guess (haven't tried it yet) it could still work, and you can use it on any tileset. But if you want to do edits and have it for one grassy/dirty/snowy area, then you'd fill it with the basic ground element. :D

I found this information on RPG Maker XP Tutorial.

In the top left-hand corner, we have the main tile. This consists of the four outermost corners of the large tile below. The middle tile at the top is the main tile which the autotile will tile with - in other words, another autotile that will tile with this autotile. For example, if you take a look at the waterfall autotile above, you will see that it has the main tile of the lake autotile here. This means that it will tile seamlessly with the lake.

So this is what I got from the above and your help, Sashikinaroji! I didn't want you to think I stopped this project! I'm not one to give up on my stuff ^,^

The top right still needs the four inverse (Interior as you told me ^,^) corners, and I'm finding it right now, but I wanted to share my progress! ;D

(You can see it still needs editing though around the botton 96x96 grid lol)

EDIT:
Oh wow! Thanks for the animation autotiles, Sash! :D That will help with the fire, water, and the lave and I'm thinking I want to edit the sand to make it look like the wind is blowing it around, but I'm not sure :P

Oh, and I might try wavy grass :D
