(If this is the wrong place to post this, please tell me. I couldn't figure where to post this. Sorry if it is.  ;))

So basicly one day it kinda just hit me. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have thought about this. Age of Empires is like many games. But could it be done on RMXP. I think this is a fair question. I can't even begin to think how it could be done with Events. Nor would I like to think about how you'd most likely have to make your own EVERYTHING when it came to sprites and things. A World Map Tile set would be easy enough to come by, but everything else....

Well, I would love to hear some thoughts on this. I'm not asking so much a Tutioral or a 'how to question'. Just wondering if this have been done before, could it be done, or anything thoughts on this at all. One could see how nice it would be to know that this game is a possibleity to make. If not a strict AOE type game, you could certainly use parts of the style of game play, right? But thats my thought.

Well this would be really cool and i have been interested in making my own RTS games.  I think that people who make an RTS game use Game Maker, though if it an be done in RMXP that would be really cool.

I was thinking it wouldn't be too hard to get the art done. I mean you'd have to be handy with sprite art. But all in all, not hard. If you wanted to use your mouse, like many of this games do, i've seen scripts for that. But you'd have to tweak it i'm sure to get that script just right for this sytle of game. But if you were to do anything in eventing...Honestly seems intense.

I totally agree it would be really cool to be able to do this! I think if I were to sit down and start a project, I'd want to make a game like that...

well I'm decent with events, and yea I think it would have to be a event/ script combo to get the job done. You'll need stuff like path finding scripts, and youd have to make an AI to play against, you can take a look at this one script that is a turn based strategy game.

If it could be done though would be really cool.

No lie I was thinking the same thing about the combo. Your right you'd have to have a path finding script. I'm pretty sure you'd also have to have completely redo the EXP system, Health, and Stats. I'm talking Compete over haul. But I guess the limit as always is creativeity.

I'll def check the script out.I think I might start doing some investigating on this topic. I mean we can't be the only people to think about this...haha.

I love Age of Empire (and games like it), it would be neat to see it done. But how would you get the tilesets? It would be pretty tricky.  :-\

Not really. Though alot of planning would have to be done. You'd have think of it this way. There are two types of maps. Normal Maps and World Maps. A Normal Map could be a simple Smaller verison of a world map. A World Map would be just that. You'd most likely use this if were going to do something like "Civilisation", where you have Nations and such that battle it out. Or as in AOE style each AI and Player start out in an area like a corner and play it out like that. So the easiest (easy to make, not on events. If you ahve to Event heavy, then there will be lag) would be the world map. You could get a tileset for that or make your own by combining many World Map tile sets or just making it from scratch. I'd say the Tile sets would be the same as a defealt game. OR I guess you could tweak it in some way. But I can't really think of how.

I think, I and Mr_Wiggles have thought about it. Also I'm checking into it, but I'm trying to find to see if anyone else has thoughts on it. Maybe someon has made one...who knows.

The major issuse isn't so much the work. Its the begining of it. The way you'd have to go about doing it. Also you'd have to be REALLY good with Scripts and events. I'm kinda handy with Events, but I couldn't touch it with Scripts...

I mean you'd have to work out what to use, how to use it, and when. I know that applies for just baout everything, but this is more less like devussing a bomb.

I'm learning Scripting too. I'm just beginging like you. I'm also looking into the Unreal Developement Kit. So yeah, theres alot to learn...At the same time though, I'm playing around with the notion of AOE sytle game, with events. I'm in the process of making Buildings events, for the player to build. Which is very very basic, if I really wanted to do this (most likely something I'm going to try) I'd do WAY better art...but I'm not. basicly I'm having a fondation, then someof it built, then it complete. I've also made a cursor instead of a player. But i think I'm going to some how make it inter changeable. Basicly, I just want to get the Building concept working first. If you have any insight....it would be great.

If you want to make a real, fully functional, AoE-style RTS game, you're not going to want to use RMXP.  It's way too slow to make a proper RTS, you'll have to code everything from the ground up anyway, you're better off using something more powerful like XNA or C++ since you'll be coding from scratch either way.

However if you're looking for a TBS game (like Advanced Wars) then RMXP would work well, there are a couple scripts out there for it and they work well...usually.

Why thank you. I figured as much. I guess I was just being hopeful... :)

I kept asking myself how I was going to deal with it, lagging and or any other problem of such. But it would seem I kept putting it to the back of my mind. I'm most def going to look into XNA and C++. But first I'm going to look into Advanced Wars and ways for a TBS. Thank for the input. You might of just saved some trail and error time! But question. Is it compeltely hopeless though, if I make it some how interchangeable, From a normal RPG to a RTS. Have a base of a RPG and then at some instances switch up game play by adding a RTS style. Hm. I'm doing terrible at explaining this.

EX: Alright I've traveled all the land and saved many and really learned about the ways of the world and many things concerning myself. BUT OH NOES! The King needs me to save him and the Kingdom from those GRUNTS!?!? K. Gottcha. I'll command the armys and save the day!

(During most of the game you play a normal RPG, but when you have to save the Kingdom...You have to step up and take control of the Army, which is where it would be RTS sytle.)

I hope that Clears up what I mean. Would that Example be doable? I'm only asking, becasue maybe you could save me even more time of Trail and Error.  :blizj:

You're quit right! Both of you. I'll try to really put on my thinking cap for this one (if and when I sit down and go for it). I really don't want something annoying or Generic.

So, to sum things up....

Spoiler for:
-RMXP is not the best choice for a RTS, for the simple fact it will be slow.

-You have to work from the ground up, which is why it is suggested to use another program that will be better suited for an RTS, such as... XNA or C++.

-Scripts would be the best to do a RTS, with a little help with events. But have to be creative in use of said scripts and will have to work from scratch.

-Tile sets and other graphics are the same as it would be for any game. To make a good game, you should have a sort a style and feel for the visuals. It isn't the hardest part, but could be some work. Work with alot less thinking, more of kinda doing.

-Could have RTS thrown in your game and shouldn't be too bad, but you don't want it to be a Genre-switching, which can be annoying.

-Alot of time and work and care would and should be put into the project.

Does that about sum it all up? Please add something if you can. But other wise, maybe this should be locked?  :o
