Side-scrolling RPG

What I'm looking for is a script that enabels 2D gameplay. You know... Like a platform but with rpg elements. I tryed to use game maker but I'm unable to transfer the player were I want.
More details: The player will be able to climb latters, jump off clifs and (optional) a
map (a metroid tipe of map).
I would be really gratefull if anyone can give me any help.

I don't think 2d is the right term for this.

Side-scrolling RPG would be better.

The only thing left now is to find a way to ad a special image for when the caracter jumps.
