Anyone here uses Linux?

Just wondering if any Linux folks uses Linux in general or for RPG Maker(s).

I'm thinking to switch from my downgraded Acer Aspire 5515 Windows Xp laptop to Linux/Unbuntu.

Anyone tried any other programs in Linux? (ex: Adobe Programs, Music Notation)

Ubuntu has been nothing but pain, and anger. If you're looking for a OS for photo shooping and music making, then linix if fine. If you're looking for RPG maker, and gaming, then run away.

RPG maker runs horrid in UBUNTU, I don't know how it runs in other linox's but I doubt it's any better. Stick with Windows. (Or Mac if that's how you roll.)

If you're looking for more free ram, Windows 7 is going to make your problem worse.

Facepalm x1000. You want to use linux to "save ram" to run WINDOWS programs better?

XP will run ok on 128 megs. The problem is not the OS, it is that you are choosing bloated, inefficient heavy pieces of shit for your software.

My computer is fine, its just that Linux looks like it has potential.

My Acer is pretty much new. Got it three months ago.
Linux seemed right and It ran fast(er) than vista and xp. I only had wireless problems.

And I also read that Windows 7 was up for download by Microsoft.

Yeah Linux should really be used only if you don't have the money for buying an OS. If you need more ram, get more ram.

Agreed with the last part. It's dirt cheap bro, you have no reason to not  get more (if it's running slow) unless you're broke.

Ubuntu isn't for everyone. Let's put that out on the table right now. Linux definitely isn't for everyone.
Ubuntu tries to make linux more appealing to those who wouldn't normally think about Linux as an alternative, and it does a damn good job of making it accessible. Now personally I prefer KDE distributions (Ubuntu uses Gnome Desktop Environment) but that's just me. I've used more programs that (and as cliche as this sounds) just work right out of the installer on various distros. Kubuntu (Kubuntu uses K desktop environment), which rocked my socks off until I updated and got so many headaches.  Although I hear it's pretty rare to update and not get problems on Kubuntu (which sounds like a down right failure, and is). Sure enough they get bug fixes but I haven't checked because I accidentally wrote over that hard drive, lol.

Zombie, have you ever even touched a Linux machine for more than a week? Just sticking your dick (no offense) in here and summing every single linux distribution as one single entity is wrong. They all (or mostly, there are a ton that seem to be so similar) appeal to different people. Fair enough to assume though, since not many people dig deep enough. Hell, I've only used three or four different ones in the past 10ish years.

And to be honest, all the problems and headaches that Linux will give the windows user - it has far more upsides - can be figured out in a good couple of months if you're going to actually use it as a semi-permanent OS. I'd suggest dual-booting, give 20-50GB or space to linux and if you really like it, well hell, go for it.
Linux is quite powerful and if you want to mess around with Wine, (which plays most windows games already, maybe not perfectly but you're not going to play a game perfectly on a laptop to begin with) it's constantly being updated (just don't use the default stable version if you want updates/bug fixes faster) and supported RPG Maker XP just fine IIRC.
Nto to be redundant, but if you're actually going to try out a Linux distribution you really can't cop-out after a month because of random program #300 didn't work. Chillax and google around a bit.
Chances are someone else has ran into that same problem with the same program. Now I'd really suggest checking out http://appdb.winehq.org/ as you can search for programs that have been tested on WINE.

I'm not telling you to throw down your worries (there are a lot of downsides, Windows definitely works better for windows programs and I personally use XP since that's just how I roll) and go running to Linux but a lot people try it out for a while and then hate on it because they couldn't (sorry, but it's true) use google or official forums for help. Don't expect to be able to play games Day One, because chances are (unless you're great with configuring wine) you're going to need to wait a week-month for some god reviews.
Oh and K3B is pretty much the greatest multimedia tool ever written. Shame you can't really use it on Windows.

Sho nuff, it will never run Windows programs as well as windows will right out of the box but they're not written for Linux to begin with. if you choose to go with Linux you really can't complain about that since you should know this going into Linux.
You should really lay down the pros and cons. there are a lot on each end, so take the time to research, it's well worth it if it works out, for either OS since you at least now know what you want.

You can say that this is because linux is for smart people and windows users are retards etc - windows gives both options, both some sort of GUI or applet and also a CLI (or powershell) if you so desire. It can't take that long to "fix" ubuntu so that it really is "easy to use" by not requiring mom to edit config files or use the command line.

And you can try and defend the amount of distros if you like, but it is ridiculous. There are what, thousands of distros? And almost all of them are exactly the same. If they all stopped fucking about and banded together to bring that number down to double or even single digits, then maybe they would get  better than their pathetic (less than 1%, right?) desktop average user penetration.

It kept my Windows bootloader when I installed it. Besides, it's not hard to change your bootloader. ;o

But Linux in general is a hassle if you don't know what you're doing. Even if you do know what you're doing, it's like taking a detour instead of taking the interstate which leads straight to your destination just to install some programs/drivers.

On a positive note, I love Ubuntu's GUI. ;_;

I had Linux (Ubuntu distro 9.04) for roughly 2/3 months. I have very good hardware. Even after I got the ATI drivers for Linux my there was a very noticeable problem that my GPU was not rendering graphics properly. Also whenever I listened to music or watched movies there was a HUGE problem. Whenever I listened to music the system would crash at random. Whenever I watched movies the same would happen along with choppiness of the movie if it wasn't in full screen.

That isn't to say that I don't like Linux and what it represents, it just doesn't suit my needs. I need an operating system that just works almost all of the time. I'm sorry I don't like to dick around (no offense) on the Ubuntu forums all day to fix one simple bug (I have and it isn't fun). There is an extreme gap in reliability between Linux and other OS. No denying that. I recommend trying out Linux if you realize what a hassle it is and the fact that your BIOS will be defaulted to the grub loader (if using Ubuntu) which is also a pain in the ass from time to time. Sorry if I sorta offended you by being extremely vague, Kosciuszko.

I actually kind of enjoy messing around with this kind of stuff. Linux is the perfect Weekend Project for me, since you can keep it up for ages and actually see results pretty fast without even reaching the tip of the iceberg. Is that the right expression? Hopefully... 

That's some weird shit. I've never encountered errors like that before, and aside from my latest Kubuntu (9.04 too) update I've had all good experiences with Linux. Dicking around on the Ubuntu forums is actually not the biggest hassle, however like I said you actually have to want to keep up with it, which is a big hassle for people who just need something that works out of the box with close to 0 configuration. And oh I know it's not fun, my GUI would shit out on me every ten minutes on Kubuntu 9.04, it would stop responding, and not to mention the awful Network Manager is came with. The one in 8.10 was fine, why did they get rid of it?

Oh hohoho it's not a water slide, it's unbearable at times. Plenty of headaches. I haven't actually used Ubuntu is over a year (wrote over Kubuntu with OS X earlier this summer).
In most cases I prefer using the terminal over Dolphin (file manager). And I've had to edit many many configs in the year or two I used Ubuntu and the half a year I used Kubuntu.
I'm not trying to defend the amounts of ditros either, I've only liked two enough to actually keep them and none of them over XP Pro. I wasn't trying to blindly defend Linux or anything, I was just laying down some pros since every post in here seems to be mostly anit-Linux. They should badn together, since it's really confusing for first time probably anyone who doesn't have an RSS feed about new distros. There's Xubuntu which is just dumb. Ubuntu is already light enough to easily start up and access internet immediately. Fucking overwhelming, if you will.

Yeah me too, I have Tango icons for XP and I used tango themed task bar but I got rid of that pretty fast.
