NPC enemy during battle.

Is there any way to make a player fight another NPC in a battle scene or whatever you call it. I wanna make it look like he's fighting another hero without the statued out picture that doesn't move. I don't want to have to go threw the trouble of drawing one picture that doesn't even move during the battle. It sucks you know. How about it, got any ideas? I already know how to make a on field battle event system but it doesn't look all like a boss battle.
