Battler Sprite Making Help

I need help making Battler Sprites. I tried making some myself but i couldn't make the background transparent. Is there a way so that the white bit of the sprite doesn't show up in the game? I use microsoft paint by the way. And I don't have photoshop.

When you import a resource into XP you're given the option to set which color you would like to be completely transparent and which color you would like to be semi-transparent, like shadows. Just make sure your background color isn't used anywhere within your battler or anything and it'll be fine.
