playtest help

i just bought rpg maker the other day and i must say i'm kinda disappointed.
you see, i can create maps and events just fine i just can't test them to make sure they are actually working
i bring up the playtest window and as soon as i hit "start" i get an error message telling me it can't find my map.
at first i thought it was a problem with vista, but alas when trying it on my older computer installed with windows XP, the same thing happened.

if you can help it'd be greatly appreciated, i don't want my 60$ to be a waste.

Y'know, this is why you really should use the free trial first to see if it's for you or not. =_=;;


Let's start with some simple questions.

1. Are you using the official English version?
2. Do you have a set starting point and map for your character?
3. Did you alter any of the scripts?

Just checking one thing, on the map have you created a player start point?
To do this you rightclick in the location where you want your character to be when you start the game and select 'Players starting position'
