So I came back to VX.
I had an idea.
I want to make a game based upon stealing/sneaking.
no combat involved.
just straight up sneaking into castles and stealing things for money.

i'm at a crossroads.
I have Characters, Items, Some maps, etc.
I just don't know how to use.

Can someone help me come up with a creative manner to do this in?

i.e when guard is within 5 steps/facing you, your caught.
what happens when you get caught[i thought about maybe putting some form of combat in but only for these kinds of situations]

Please, And Thank You.

Do you know how to create events?

For what you want to do you can trigger the guard event to respond after landing on a tile 5 steps away.

1.  First create the guard as a normal NPC character (Create an event and call it for example Guard 1
2.  Second create an event 5 steps away that has a trigger command of below hero on hero touch.
3.  In the same command, go to move event (this can be any object or NPC on the map) in this case Guard 1 and move him to your character.
4.  Have the Guard say something by adding to the Guard 1 event after he moves and either make him say something or make a command after he says something that teleports your hero to a different location on the map...to make it more realistic have the screen fade out as well
5.  If you want have the guard attack you by starting a battle all within the same Guard 1 event

There are probably other ways to do the steps above...I am fairly new myself...so if there is a better way someone else should feel free to say so.

Another thing, you could have the Guard 1 escort your character to a prison for trying to sneak in or steal something
1.  Add an action to the Guard 1 event that makes you and the Guard 1 event move simotaniously to a prison cell...making it so your character has to escape somehoe...kind of like in Zelda OoT in the Gurodo Fortress.

One more thing, I keep thinking of more ideas, when you get near the guard if you want to include a fighting element to the game...have the guard sound an alarm which would trigger random battles...just a thought though

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Classic stealth action includes several types of devices and conventions that would prove useful if you can even them.
Shadows - Have different levels of shaded areas reduce the range at which guards can see you.
Water Arrows/"Shooting out the Lights" - Allow a means to extinguish torches and fires to increase the shadows in the area.
Creaky Boards - have certain floor types cause guards to look in your direction.
Whistling Arrows/"Knocking on Walls" - allows you to either attract the attention of a guard or to misguide it somewhere else (ie. where your arrow lands)
Silent Kill/"Tranqued!" - Give your character the ability to dispose guards by attacking them directly from behind.
Hiding Spaces - places like crates, ceiling boards, closets, pantries. Places the character can instantly recognize as hiding spaces to avoid danger.

Those are pretty basic but I hope they help.

Not to be predictable, but...
I think when he said 'event 5,' he was referring to an event trigger five tiles away from the guard, so that when you stepped on it, the guard would turn to look at you, or notice you.
