I watched Back to the Future tonight, and aside from being one of my favorite movies, I noticed some things about society as a whole. Follow me here for a second...
Back to the Future contains:
-Multiple uses of "curse" words, including, but not limited to: assholes, shit, God damn, and Jesus Christ.
-A scene involving attempted rape.
-Immediately following the rape scene, there is a scene involving a black band, where a white character calls them "Spoons," which if you didn't know, is a racist term for black people.
These things aren't anything new, and they certainly are tame by today's standards, but I paid special attention to this content during this viewing for one reason. I noticed that the movie is rated PG.
If, by some twist of fate, Steven Spielberg didn't make Back to the Future in the 80's, and came up with the idea today, I guarantee that with the exact same content (though I'm sure the special effects would be more pronounced) this movie would at least be rated PG-13. The funny thing about all of this, is that it's pretty obvious that kids are more desensitized now than they were back in the 80's. That seems to go against rational thought. I would blame the internet, which of course has no rating, but mostly it's sloppy parenting. Anyway, I'm not here to start a morality contest, because I'd probably end up coming in pretty close to last. I just wanted to point out that people today are whiny bitches, and wouldn't tolerate similar content in a modern PG rated movie. Even if it was in a masterpiece like Back to the Future.
PS. Locke's song from Final Fantasy VI is a direct ripoff of the theme song from this movie. How did I never notice this?
