I'm not going to take part in this, as I'm sick and tired of people just bitching about how rich people can't be insanely stupidly rich anymore.  but if you all want a place to carry out an 'OBAMA IS A SOCIALIST FUCK AMERICA WE'RE DOOMED' rant, then go ahead and talk about it here.

Also, no offense to anyone, but many of you are kids and you shouldn't be acting like you know what you're talking about here. I'm not an expert either, nor do I claim to be, but when you're 16 you shouldn't be complaining because you heard "Obama is a Marxist" or "he rigged the election" or "he's having legal issues so he may not be President" or "his policies are going to ruin the country" or "people just voted Obama to be cool" or "his tax plan will bankrupt businesses" (har har Irock).

Yeah there was a lot of talk about that recently, but it was another one of those things where it's full of half-truths and important parts are left out to better fit the image they're trying to portray. Obama never voted against the bill, he only voted "present".

I believe the whole "we shouldn't have socialized medicine because homeless people are too lazy to work and therefore don't deserve healthcare" argument is just an excuse greedy rich class people made up because they don't want to pay as many taxes as the middle class currently does. Either that or it's a rumor that America's Health Insurance companies started because they don't wanna be replaced even though they deserve it. I'm well aware that lots of people abuse the welfare system, but regardless of that, the longevity of your life shouldn't be determined by how much money you have. And the speculation that "Universal Health Care will turn our country into a completely Communist one just like Soviet Russia" is bullshit. We have socialized public schools, and THAT hasn't turned us into a Communist country! Socialism =/= Communism.

The only thing I DON'T like about Obama is the possibility that he might try to reinstate the assault weapons ban. You guys all know how much I love weapons. :3

Other than that though, I was cheering my ass off the night he won the election. Overall, I support Obama. And even if the assault weapons ban passes, it's not like I'll need one for practical defense or anything.

I don't think you understand, there are thousands and thousands of people who live off of welfare and unemployment because they don't WANT to get a job, they are surviving off of a system put in place to help up America on the BASIS of Socialism! Socialism is the idea that everyone will work together to accomplish a better country, so that in the system of everyone being a participating member of society, we CAN have things like welfare and a healthcare system because everyone is earning it. But there ARE people who aren't working because they know they can live off of these systems that are falling apart. What kind of economy would put more strain on the less wealthy class? The wealthy are taxed the most, it's the poor who get tax cuts, Obama has said that the people who make less than 200k a year will get tax cuts. Why do you think ANYONE at all would just give the people who have the money to pay full taxes tax cuts? Bush cut taxes for everyone, but progressively. As in the more money you make, the less of a tax cut you get.

I'm not opposing Universal Healthcare, but I know that it is going to fail if people don't get off their asses and work to save the economy instead of hoping everything will get better. We SHOULD have to pay to live, it is your mindset that is what is pulling it down. You want everything handed to you on a silver platter. We don't have the money to give every single person in the country healthcare because so many people don't work and they don't pay taxes. America doesn't "pull it off" because, as I said before, people don't work to support the economy.

Bush cut taxes for everyone, but progressively. As in the more money you make, the less of a tax cut you get.

A progressive tax cut means that the more money you make, the more of a tax cut you get - working class taxpayers would get a couple hundred dollars back each year, under the Bush tax plan, while those in the highest tax bracket ($200,000 or more per year) would receive THOUSANDS, and in the case of the wealthiest Americans - upwards of $1,000,000.

Anyway, despite being an American, I'm mostly indifferent about Obama being president as long as he doesn't screw the country up even worse. I only voted him because A) I'm in Chicago and would have gotten jumped otherwise, B) I didn't like McCain's view on certain things during the debates (although I forget what they were), and C) there was a certain trial in Texas which will go very badly for someone I know with judges selected by McCain.

Anything else, I really just don't care about it too much. I've a dislike of politics in general.

Go watch sicko as for the healthcare thing. I think the american healthcare system is ridiculous. Here in the UK it's "socialised" healthcare. Of course, no system as vast as one that serves an entire country would be free from problems, and the NHS (national health service) isn't without its fair share, but overall it works pretty good.

If I become severly ill or injure myself, there's no worrying about money or anything like that. The main concern is how can they help me, and will I be safe. All I would need to get care is just to let them know who I am.

I stayed up late and watchhed him win live on TV, I was happy he won. I'm definitely for pro-choice and gay equality even though neither affect me. The same for getting religion the heck out of the state

To get it, you have to prove you're unemployed and that you are currently trying to get employment again. To keep getting the money you have to prove that you are continually making reasonable attempts to get work. If you're not, you're removed from the roll and don't get a penny.

I approve/agree with/whatever everything you just said. My only complaint about the health system is that, while it might work there, you ahve different people to choose from over here, and in my experience with government run services I really doubt I should trust my health to a government plan. You should have seen the retardation I had to go through to get my driver's permit.

@ Dr., while the health care system is usually fine, there could come a day when your insurance company decides to deny you coverage when you most need it, do to some "pre-existing condition" jargon. They're always looking for ways to avoid paying money, and medical bills are way too large to be paid without insurance.

I'm insured as well. (Unfortunately, my father isn't.) I doubt they'll pull that kind of crap on me if I ever need surgery or the like, but I always keep my mind open to the possibility that even when insured, I could still end up screwed.

Which is another reason I support Obama. There's no guarantees, but with a little luck, he might just abolish the current insurance companies. If he can't, he did mention something about "eliminating the 'pre-existing condition' restrictions". If he at least did that, anybody could get insured, and it'd be pretty hard to refuse to cover a medical bill without the "pre-existing condition" card to play.

In other words, if we are to keep the current insurance system, it needs some serious reformation and  restrictions.

Moore makes it quite clear in Sicko that a system of "socialized" medicine won't work in the U.S.; there are far too many doctors in the system that like being able to charge whatever they wish that would fight it tooth and nail - not to mention the U.S. government has a nasty track record when it comes to bureaucratic control of anything.

IMHO, the best solution to this would be to abolish the Health Maintenance Organizations created by Nixon, and extend the option of Medicare to everyone. Naturally, this means somewhat higher taxation in some area, but OTOH there is nothing the government can do, without earning the wrath of SOME mistreated minority.

Actually Canada has this huge doctor crisis because everyone runs down to the USA after they finish their medical training.

With a non-natural-born socialist President, "reaching across partylines" in a government completely dominated by one party, most of whom would like us to be Canada (I've got nothing against the Scandinavian brand of socialism), and talk of extending term limits, I'm sure will get out of our innumerable crises pretty fast, I mean an empire worked for Germany in the 1930's right?
The real beauty of it though is that it'll move us into the next step of human politics where a dictator rises to power in an inefficient democracy, cause shit can't get done, and tightens the grip on the ignorant herd that are the average citizens. After that it shouldn't be too long before people they aren't livestock and will destroy the empire and thrusting the country into anarchy cause the fucking herd has no one to wipe their asses. Then another dictator will rise as a father figure, only to be toppled by a rebellion leading to the rise of the democracy we have today, and maybe then people will realize that a government isn't supposed to respect the individual, but rather process numbers and keep the data safe as the machine that it is!
