Battle calculation???

Ok lets say you've got 2 armies fighting each other with 5 different units available with different stats.what would be the best way to calculate these battles.would excel be my best bet for making those calculations?if anybody knows how to make a battle calculator it would be greatly appreciated if you posted here to help me.
