So RMRK is getting an exclusive look at some of the sketches (not yet really finished products) where my concept artist streak shows a bit.

Be warned that these are largely horror-type creatures, so some images are potentially grotesque and/or disturbing (but hey, this is the interweb).
Underneath each picture is a little description.

Spoiler for "Nutjob":

Unnerving in appearance though not intrinsically malevolent, the "nutjob" is an embodiment of a mental disorder.
"Destigmatise us" refers to people afflicted by mental disorders, and the attitude of society toward them.
The skin being folded back to show a face underneath is a visual metaphor for uncovering an underlying problem.

Spoiler for "Hanging Doll":

Originally an attempt to engineer an entirely synthetic creature in man's image, the project was abandoned halfway through, reducing dozens of partially finished "dolls" to little more than macabre hanging ornaments.

Spoiler for "Mantid":

"Mantid" is the common name of any number of dead men who were reanimated by preternatural means, their forelimbs replaced by pincers.
This particular specimen was killed by blunt trauma to the head, only to find new life as an abominable fusion of man, insect, and hellspawn.

Spoiler for "Apnea":

A mysterious man offered to rid a young girl of all her sleep disorders, under one condition: when he pulled them from her, they would manifest as a tangible monster. She reluctantly accepted.

Spoiler for "Pixie":

Often mistakenly called fairies, "pixies" are not as playfully mischievous as their namesake--they are outright cruel, with a twisted sense of humour and a penchant for inflicting many different types of pain. Some practice what could be called mind games, while many simply claw at the eyes of any person they come across.

Spoiler for "Tree-man":

Thought to exist only within a few surprisingly tales supposedly meant to frighten children away from going into the woods alone, "tree-men" live in solitude in the hearts of forests that are host to strong dark energies.

This topic will be updated on a somewhat sporadic basis, with newly scanned sketches and completed versions of previously seen designs.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't expecting this to get that much attention.

Here's another couple of pictures and some text.
While not a "creature," per se, it's still concept art.

Spoiler for "Iolis":

few hundred years later

Originally a Native American medicine man who constantly strived for more influence among his tribe, he was the quickest to learn Spanish and convert to Catholicism when explorers arrived, damning the rest of the tribe.
He was carried back to Europe as proof of a new world filled with impressionable, educable people.
Spaniards marveled at his intelligence, particularly his biblical knowledge. He became a widely respected priest, but still craved more power.
Like all good priests would, he turned to the bible for answers. Upon first glance, it provided none, but as he reread it, he became fascinated by the Abrahamic concepts of beasts and demons.
To the shock of the congregation and the clergymen, he left the church and embarked on a year-long journey to gather whatever information he could on the darkest of angels. Over time his obsession grew and his focus narrowed.
Somehow he came to learn that the wall between the earth and the detention of Samael--an angel born not of divine wisdom, but of human corruption--could be weakened by the union of the bones of a Nephilim and the skull of a behemoth.
His initial attempt was unsuccessful, but was enough to notify Samael of the existence of a follower.
In exchange for his servitude, Samael granted Iolis the gift of immortality. His body continued aging, but every time one part ceased to function, either the other parts would adapt to function without it, or it would be replaced with something less human--less likely to shut down.

Yeah, the description is long compared to the other ones, but that's because he was a central figure in a graphic novel I was planning on making a while ago.

Once again, thanks to everyone who's commented.

CUTE.
Okay, maybe I'm weird, but I still consider horror stuffs as cuteness. ;___;

Well, I can actually see "Nutjob," at least, as cute in a sort of bizarre way. And the face behind him, even though it's pasty, covered in scars, devoid of eyebrows,  snaggletoothed, and harelipped.

Spoiler for Anomaly:

When this showed up on an X-Ray, the doctors were hard-pressed to identify it, but they very quickly came to a consensus that it wasn't normal.

And now for something quite creepy:

Spoiler for Cagemouth:

When I was perhaps two years old or younger (yes, I can remember that far back), I had a dream where I was at my then babysitter's house, along with the other children she looked after during the day. The children, myself included, were all in her backyard. I noticed that everyone was shutting their mouth very tightly, so I asked why, and simultaneously, everyone's jaws fell open impossibly wide, showing that their mouths were barred and serving as cages for bats.
Some of the drawing's quality was lost in the scanning process.

Quite a dream. XD

The Cagemouth drawing is awesome, Dertt. The mouth is open is widely. XD
A stomach that has a mouth, that's extremely strange, indeed.

I'm not sure when I drew it... probably around a year ago. I only got around to inking and colouring it a couple of weeks ago, though.

Ah, I see.  I ask because it shows improvement from the previous pieces you posted.

No, but seriously, I agree. It's very original, you could be a designer for Silent Hill.  ;8
