Introduction:

This is still greatly a work in progress. There most likely will not be a demo for a month or two. All the characters are not fully planned; I've only posted the ones that are.
I am hoping that by posting this topic now, I will get critique before I make my demo, so I will not have to alter parts already in the game.

Now, onto the actual game. My hopes for Devinity Construct are to make a game world that seems as if its breathing, as if the characters in it are alive. My goal is to make the player feel what the characters feel, see as the characters see. I'm trying to stay away from the typical cliches used in RPGs of this style and make a truly unique game that people will want to play again. Now, I doubt I will reach any of those goals, but perhaps with critique before I start on the game, I might come a bit closer than if I was alone in the development of the story, characters, and the world itself. So, as your reading, please post your thoughts on anything from names of countries or characters to ideas of the bits of the story I have worked into this post.

Story:

Tales tell of an ancient city that could soar with the birds among the clouds. This city, known as Devinity, was said to be home to the Magi, beings who wielded a powerful force known as magic. Tales go on to tell of a war between the Dragon Kings of Elinyl and the city. The War of Devinity, as the tales call it, marked the end of Devinity, the Dragon Kings bringing the city to the ground and slaughtering the Magi that resided in it. As time went on, the destruction of Devinity, the Magi, and the Dragon Kings vanished from the annals of time, save these few tales told by bards and storytellers...

Now the stories of Devinity once again rise to tongue, the tyrant king Dantyl of Ilniral sending troops into the country in search of what rumors call the last remaining Magi. His search brings destruction to villages, homes, families, sparing no one between the Magi and Dantyl.

William Castor, 17-year-old member of the thief group Barron's Company, is also one touched by Dantyl's madness. His parents killed by Dantyl's knights, William travels the world of Elinyl, no longer believing that he is affected by the troubles of Ilniral as he tries to foget his past.

However, the tale of Devinity has a far greater grip of Will than he yet knows...

Characters: Now all with sprites!

Spoiler for:
William Castor----Age: 17----Weapon: Swords----Gender: M
"Devinity? Never heard of it!"
>The youngest member of Barron's Company, he was orphaned at the age of seven, soon after 'adopted' by Barron. Taught by Barron himself, he has grown to be a kind young man. Lively and carefree, he has nightmares every night about his parents' brutal murders...

Reen Arone----Age: 17----Weapon: Daggers----Gender: F
"I am the last of the Magi, as far as I know."
>The young woman hunted by Dantyl for being the last Magi, Will saves her from Dantyl's troops soon after his first assignment with Barron's Company. In public she is quiet and timid, with Barron's Company she is lively and radiant, her favorite pastime being sketching her thoughts. She clings to Will as if a shadow, Will being the only one she truly trusts.

Barron----Age: 42----Weapon: Axes----Gender: M
"Break any of these rules, you're on your own."
>The leader and founder of Barron's Company, he is a very genial man, always putting others before himself. He sympathizes with any caught in Dantyl's madness, as his wife and home were destroyed by Dantyl's knights.

Edina Leoros----Age: 13----Weapon: Flute----Gender: F
"My family is gone... Why did they have to leave me all alone?"
>A young musician from Etinrue, a village destroyed by Dantyl's knights in search of Reen. She finds a new home with Barron's Company, Barron himself becoming a fatherly figure to her as they both have experienced similar tragedies. She is very timid around everyone but Barron.

More coming soon...

Countries:

Spoiler for:
Kingdom of Ilniral----Leader: Tyrant King Dantyl
>The once perfect image of peace and prosperity, now this country has fallen nearly to ruin at Dantyl's madness. He search for Reen has taken its toll on the citizens, some having lost their homes, others their families, and still others their lives. There are very few people in Ilniral who were not touched by Dantyl in some way, save the nobles, whom Dantyl keeps happy and plump so that they will lend him their knights.

Empire of Herius----Leader: Lady Oliverte
>Ilniral's former ally, now the two countries are nearly at war. The citizens, following Lady Alicia Oliverte's example of taking in the surviving royal family, have given shelter to all Ilniral citizens who crossed the border to escape Dantyl's madness. The Empire of Herius is the largest country on Elinyl.

Yulenima----Leader: North: Stella Roth, South: Egnius Trulle, East: Grinam Eddica
>The third country on the first continent. The only factor that keeps these three tribes called a country is that they all fight together, not against eachother. Each of the tribes, North, South, and East, keep the legends of Devinity alive, claiming that it was their country that Devinity is buried, though no exploration has ever turned up evidence to support the claim. Dantyl has been trying to secure a foothold in this country, as each of the leaders possesses a unique 'power' he believes comes from Magi blood. Stella can see briefly into the future, Egnius and summon water, and Grinam can levitate for short periods of time. Dantyl believes that this means the tribes are Magi. In tribal tongue, Yulenima is actually two words, Yulen ima, which means Giver [of] Life, which comes from the tribal belief that the god of earth, Nerric, gives life and children to humans, and they believe Nerric lives in Devinity under their country.

Features:

  • Expansive World Map spanning several countries and three continents.
  • No random battles!
  • Leveling Spells/Skills

Pics/Screens:

As I have not yet worked on the actual game itself, only weapons, characters, skills, etc., I only have one pic: the city of Devinity.

Spoiler for:

It may not look like it, but it is floating.

Go away Hakumen...
The story certainly presents more originality than the usual, that is, with the exception of the names,(sound almost LOTR style). Other than that sounds good. Keep it up!

@Kaitenshin: Well, thanks! I've never read the books, only seen the movies, so maybe the sound of them came from it, but the names just came from variations of others. Like Dantyl came from Dantes, Elinyl came from Elincia. I tried to make them more original.

@Leviathan: Thanks, I need the luck.

UPDATE: Updated credits and added country profiles for the first continent.
