Game suddenly can't load its own data

Several hours ago I turned my PC off. About one hour ago, I turned it on once again, and went to open my RMXP project. Much to my dismay, instead of loading the project, I got an error message reading "Failed to load tileset data."
I decided to try an experiment, so I made a copy of my project folder, went into the data folder, and replaced the data it was failing to load (tileset, map info, scripts, common events, and system... only those) with the same files from an earlier version of my project. Well, the game opened, but I was horrified to find that I was missing around thirty maps, all of my common events, and a few other things, I'm sure.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Or just, how can I get the game to load its own data files (again, only tileset, map info, scripts, common events, and system, no others)?
I really need help, because I can't even remember what most of those maps were, much less rebuild them, and I don't have the time to redo any of the other stuff.
Seriously.

ouch. sounds like the data got corrupted somehow. i don't know if its possible to restore it, but its possible you have a worm. how long has it been since you last ran a virus scan?

some computers have a setting, that automatically backs up your hard drive every now and again. if you have this feature on and are lucky, a recent backup could solve the problem.

Whoa, delayed response here.

No worm or any such thing.
The computer did stall before it shut RMXP down completely, and I was forced to turn it off manually... but that's never affected my game data before.

Anyone else have any ideas? I refuse to let my game die because of something like this.

I have no idea what causes this error, but it would always happen after a manual shutdown on one of my old computers.

Most you can do is try putting other data files in your project, and find out which one is corrupted. Backup every day or two from now on.

Uh, I hate it when that happens. I've had it a good few times.
Did you shut the computer down, or did you simply turn it off or pull the plug?

Simply turned it off, because Windows and/or Satan was causing my computer to move excruciatingly slowly, if at all.

Is there a way to recover the data?
